And also what are my chances to Penn state Schreyer Honors College.
Thank you for your time.

I think your chances of getting into Cornell and Penn State are pretty high. You should also look at schools like University of Illionois Urbana, UCSD, or University of Maryland College Park. Public Universities typically like students with high SAT scores and Class Rank

Your 93 GPA – is A- ish, call it a 3.7 - 3.75. I think that 97=A+, 95=A, 92=A-, is about right. With 6 APs, you’ve probably taken mostly challenging courses, so … 4.5 weighted.

There are differing thoughts here on whether that’s low, and how low it is (remember, our views don’t matter). I think this is won’t keep you out if you have other factors in your favor. If it is low, it’s not low by much.

SATs – 1500 (with the !, I’m assuming it’s two-part, not three part) – and this should be fine. (if it’s a 3 part SAT, it’s seriously low for Cornell).

Born in Africa – I don’t know what Cornell does about this, but it does add some diversity.

Activities and awards look good.

Ok – so the problem we have in evaluating, is that your application is probably somewhat unique, which is both good and bad. If you were US born, with these stats, I’d say average shot (maybe a bit above) if not URM. Very good shot if URM.

Certainly it’s worth your applying to Cornell. However, I don’t think anyone here can really say more than that.

If you actually have a 1500/2400, then I would say that you probably won’t get in. You really have to bring that score up by several hundred points. If you can significantly raise your scores, then you will have a decent shot at either.

!!! that is why it is in red, another junior had the same thing and people told her/him that it would not be possible. but I am not taking the sat again, I am taking the ACT. The reason it is low is well it is kind of embarrassing but i am sure you know… but I will not send it. and yes I am a URM born in Africa,

Your course rigor looks solid; class rank could be higher, but it does not put you out of the running. You have diverse ECs – they could be more impressive, but they aren’t bad. Aim for 30+ on the ACT and I think you have a decent shot; being a URM helps significantly.

Being a URM helps for sure, but it’s nothing to piggy back off of. Super low scores like that would be a red flag. There are tons of qualified applicants out there, many of them being URM’s. After having gone through the application process as a URM myself with higher test scores and similar activities, I was rejected to 50% of the schools I applied to. You gotta get good test scores, that’s just the way it is. Good scores are baseline, everything on top of that is what would make you stand out.

Thank you every one,
well I thought I got a 2250 as shown on my last chance me but as you can see it is not the out come. What other EC could I put in by the way
freshman year- GPA- 91 rank 134
sophomore- 92 rank 77
junior year- 95 rank 61 but about at the end of the year56
so I have improved. but how would you enhance your chances if you were me? regardless of sat and act

You’ve mentioned that you’re a URM, born in Africa. Is English your native language? If not, this provides an explanation for the scores.

Here’s the problem – Cornell generally accepts students with 700 ish on each of the parts of the SATs. This is generally thought to be overkill. Students who score in the 600-650 range probably have the skills to do the course work. It’s one of the reasons a school can take diversity into account, accept URMs with lower standardized tests and still be confident that they have a qualified class.

With 500 ish on each part, the concern would be that the demonstrated skills are not sufficient to succeed academically at Cornell. (Note, I’m not saying intelligence or anything like that – just demonstrated academic skills) At a certain point, it’s really not fair to the student or the University if they don’t think that s/he can do the work.

So, let’s assume there’s a line somewhere – no one here knows where the line is, or how one can demonstrate to Cornell that you can do the work. All we can really do is compare what you provide to us with statistics we’ve seen from similar students, and offer uneducated guesses as to what the school will do. Based on what we’ve seen, 1500 3 part SAT looks low.

Otherwise, for your application to succeed, you will have to hope for a detailed review where someone does a facts and circumstances analysis.

What can you do? I really don’t know. I think you have to sit down with your guidance counselor and have a discussion as to what these scores mean, whether they can be explained, and what your chances are.

Other than that – all you can do is apply and hope for the best.

URM will not help you with such a low SAT. There are PLENTY of other URMS Cornell can choose from. Penn won’t take you either. The only reason they would take such a low SAT is if they are recruiting an athlete. But, even 1500 is low for an athlete…

I realLy want to thank all of you, this is why cornell is better than the others, people will help you If i took the act in sept do you think it would get to them on time? For ED!

I was going to write about how my teachers called me stupid… And one day I found my love of astronomy, but it is 850 words at it’s best, I don’t know what to do!
