Is Cornell looked down upon by the other Ivies?

Applejack: that ... is sublime.

An Ivy degree is an Ivy degree. If I were to get either a Harvard or Yale degree, I wouldn't care-- at least I earned one of those. The same applies to Cornell. I think people need to rid themselves of the thought of "Which Ivy is the worst of all?" In contrast, I don't think there exactly is the "best of all of the Ivies?" It depends on preference and whether an individual finds solace in the school.

Maybe it's because we are from New York City, and therefore have a mixture of NYS pride and the desire for cheaper tuition, but my classmates and I agreed the other day that the mix is

Harvard

Princeton/Yale

Columbia/Cornell/Penn

Brown/Dartmouth

^ my thoughts

@ sebcart:

I posted the exact same breakdown earlier in this thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061719676-post71.html

(see the bottom of that post)

Perhaps I'm biased as well, but I tend to agree with sebcartwright's break down (sans the big gap). Many wouldn't, though.

Re: Cast's post - I actually think the value of a Cornell education has little to do with the Ivy League and to fall back on that as justification for respecting a school is a little lazy.

I think the school stands on its own in the same way peer schools like Northwestern or Duke or Johns Hopkins stand on their own.

i agree with applejack. I think that Cornell really stands out on its own and provides students with tons of resources and an amazing education... the Ivy League status is an added bonus and definitely can't hurt!

You kids are amazing. Amazingly shallow, I'm afraid. All this debate about "the worst Ivy" and "being looked down upon," is just ridiculous.

And, yes, Cornell is part private and part public, land grant university. If you're a current student and don't know that then you didn't do your homework. Besides, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

What's with the dissing of Penn State? I'd put PSU's Schreyer's Honors students up against Harvard's athletes and legacies any day. Same goes for the other Ivies.

Is Cornell looked down upon by the other Ivies? Come on, give me a break. A really stupid question to post. I can't believe there are Cornell students or wannabees with such low self-esteem that they actually care what kids at other Ivies think about Cornell. Then again, maybe there are lots of people with low self-esteem.

What's the world coming to.

We really like Cornell but there is no way my D would turn down a full ride merit at Penn State-University Park to take on 50K a year in loans to go to Cornell or even Harvard. That would be nuts.

Actually, Cornell is an all private, part land grant university. While I agree that no student should take on 50K a year in loans for ANY school, I turned down full rides to 2 decent schools in order to go to Cornell and I am sooo glad that I did. I got an amazing education. And I have friends who turned down Harvard to go to Cornell. There are a lot of majors at Cornell that you simply cannot find at the other Ivies.

When we made the breakdown at school the other day, we joked without Wharton, Penn would be a "run of the mill Ivy."

More on topic, I have to admit, the only people I've ever seen who have ever openly looked down upon Cornell were people who went to Penn.

^ They're just sore about being confused with PSU, lol.
