I have been really involved in a multitude of clubs and activities throughout high school, however the only “sport” I have done is dance which I will have done all 4 years. I am active on my dance team, but do you think this is good enough for colleges for a sport? I still have 2 years, should I do something else too?
Generally, I would consider it under the category of Visual and Performing Arts rather than Athletics. If you are getting P.E. credit for it, however, I suppose that you can put it in either category. But dance is not a recruitable sport, so there’s no advantage to listing it as a “sport.”
The Common App asks you to list your extracurricular activities and you will describe the type of activity that best suits the activity. You will have the opportunity to describe it as a team activity and talk about competitions won and honors achieved, as well as any leadership positions you might have held on the team.
Note that if you are engaged in some sort of visual or performing art, some schools might allow you to submit an arts supplement. I would only do this if you are a superb dancer at a competitive level.
You ask what else you could do to strengthen your application - You can perhaps think about working with younger students in underserved populations that might not otherwise have access to dance programs? Or working with your school’s theater program in choreographing a play?
What colleges want to see is consistency, passion, and a capacity for leadership. In a sense, unless the activity is something really unusual, the activity itself matters less than how you approach it and the role it has in your life (e.g., were you doing it just to fulfill a P.E. requirement or is it a true passion for you? How integral to the team were you? How does it relate to your application as a whole?
Yeah sure. College’s don’t necessary require a sport but dancing is a good EC and up can categorise it as a sport if you want. They aren’t gonna nitpick
