I'm new on these forums... i've never posted before, only because i felt no need to have myself sucked into the college craze, frenzy, and basically... hysteria. BUt i've given in, as you can see.

I've received a likely, or what i think is a likely from dartmouth. Can i basically assume that anything i receive before april 1st is a likely? I also called the admissions office, and they said that if i receive a likely, i'm 100% admitted.
This is what part of my letter said.... they also sent me 2 others

Dartmouth College extends its warmest greetings and hearty congratulations for your outstanding academic achievements! As we in the admissions office continue to evaluate the applications we have received for the class of 2009, a small and select group of well-qualified students emerges. We take great pleasure in informing you that you are part of this talented group and hope that you consider the possibility of continuing your education at Dartmouth College. Our review process is not yet entirely complete, but we did want you to know that your admission to Dartmouth is very likely.
etc.etc.
I havent' seen any letters like this posted online..... so i was skeptical about whether i'd get in or not.

Also... with a likely from dartmouth, I convinced myself that I was a solid college candidate, like most of you here. Yet, I was waitlisted at WUSTL..... so now I am having second thoughts about my chances of getting into other ivy's.... am I overanalyzing? Do i still stand a chance at the other ivy's?

I thank you all in advance for your advice.

GREAT job to get a Likely from Dartmouth..... you will receive an official acceptance soon.... Dartmouth creates such an incredible sense of family for their alum....... and the green is beautiful... love their GANG GREEN t shirts!

You cannot use one school's waitlist as a gauge about another school's decision, unfortunately. It is just too hard to know what slot you complete at school X that someone else took at WUSTL... last yr someone got rejected at Princeton and Yale, accepted at Williams, while the Princeton and Yale accepted kids were waitlisted at Williams..... very hard to figure out and really unnecessary once all the decisions are in... there is a great school for everyone... and SOON you will know what YOUR choices are... hang in there ... only a few more days..... and I do actively remember how much we wanted to KNOW sooner vs later.....

Kenman, i definitely shared your concerns b/c i also got waitlisted from WashU. if you go to their forum, tho, there are several threads discussing WashU's method of waitlisting tons of high-caliber kids whom they think will choose other schools over them (b/c the kids haven't shown extra interest in WashU via visits, calls, etc.) to preserve a high yield rate. at first i was pretty ****ed about it, but then again colleges are kind of a business.

that said tho, we still don't know what could happen when it comes to the ivys. but you got a likely from D (i did too), so you will def. receive the official acceptance from D on/around april 1. as for the other ivys, maineparent's comment def. applies but know that since you got a likely from D, you are a very capable and desirable candidate for the most elite schools.

You received one today? Whoa, that's really late! But it is like an official acceptance and like everyone else said, alot of great kids got waitlisted at Wash U, but don't let that dishearten you! You just got accepted to Dartmouth! Be excited! =)

Taurustorus, I think what you said is very logical, and makes complete sense. I certainly hope this is the case for me... otherwise it looks as if I have no chance at the higher caliber schools.

I received the letter around march 4th, and my stats are okay. I have a 1460, 800 math, salutatorian, various extras... etc. you know, the regular deal.

* Congratulations Kenman* and welcome to the CC and the Dartmouth Board. YOur likely means that you will receive and acceptance letter from Dartmouth next week. Take the opportunity to sign up to go to Dimensions- Dartmouth's admitted students days. See for your self if this is the school for you. One thing that I can tell you the sense of community and comeradie at Dartmouth is amazing and they have to be the nicest bunch of students that I have come across. They truly are amongst the most happiest.

I agree with the others who state that because you got into Dartmouth that you shoud use it as a gauge to determine whether you get into the other Ivies. Remember each year each school is building a class,. What Dartmouth's mission for the class of 09 may be different than Penn's, or Princeton.

Maineparent is right about you never know who gets accepted where and for what reason. One of ny daughter's best friend got accepted at Harvard EA and was waitlisted at Dartmouth. She contacted the school, demonstrated that Dartmouth was her first choice and is now a happy 07. It seems that this year Wash U is having the same results as last year- almost like they straight out rejected no one, accepted some and waitlisted almost everyone else.
