is Dartmouth well-known internationally?

To all international students here, have most people in your country ever heard of this university?

it depends in which country...

here dart is famous for its high requirement for applicants' sat score. if you get 2400 in sat i, u definitely will be admitted. things like that..

dont know what happens elsewhere...

some would know it as the inspiration for the movie ANIMAL HOUSE

I don't think so. The universities/colleges that are really well-known internationally (Europe, Asia, and Latin America) are Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley in the US; and Cambridge and Oxford in the UK. Most people probably never heard of Dartmouth.

bruno123 is right, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley are the best known US universities in Europe.

If I didn't want to study in the US, I probably wouldn't know Dartmouth.

Same here. Almost no international recognition, like most of the Ivies also.

Dartmouth is ? also the name of a maximum security gaol in the UK.

http://www.institutions.org.uk/prisons/England/DEV/dartmouth_prison.htm

non heard of here

Actually, petaling, the link has got it wrong. The prison is Dartmoor not Dartmouth. For the UK Dartmouth is the name of the Royal Naval College, the equivalent of Annapolis. A reasonable number of people here may have heard of the Ivy League, but I very much doubt if they could name the colleges that make it up.

Dartmouth is not internationally known :(

But it is definitely a terrific school, i have applied to it twice, and i am
applying to it again. I don't know what's with it, but i love the school :(.
Although i do agree with the 2400 comment. Dartmouth is definitely a score school looking at the acceptees' stats

Nope not here.
Well known in korea (not here though): Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, UCLA, UCB, Boston U, (U chicago), NYU, JHU, and some others i cant think of.

Here: Harvard and Yale (gilmore girls)

In Canada, anyone who is involved in the academic, business, legal, or medical communities is very much aware of Dartmouth. All Ivy league schools are well-known!

id like to say that no one has actually heard of dartmouth in canada unless u r a canadian student who has taken the SAT's and is interested in studying in the US, apart from that, the only iveis known are columbia, yale, harvard, princeton, and other larger public universities, the end

what's dartmouth? (unheard in canada) i live here ...

lala, I also live here and have lived here for much of my adult life. In academic circles, the legal community, in many businesses (especially banking and related financial/investment areas) and certainly in the medical community, the majority of the people certainly know about Dartmouth, and, as I said, EVERY Ivy league school. What you say may be true in your own experience as a student, but it certainly isn't true of most adults in professional jobs, especially in large Canadian cities.

canada - harvard yale princeton columbia cornell and wharton, not necessarily penn.

... and MIT.

haha of course, sorry.

all those i mentioned plus MIT and Stanford.

I've known dartmouth since I was a kid.

One of my friends also got in last year.

It's a certainly an outstanding school, ranked among the top 10 in the U.S.

I'm not sure about the comment saying that "dartmouth only looks at stats."
-since it is a highly selective ivy league institution, ECs will be evaluated with equal weight as an applicant's stats. This fact applies to almost every Top-25 schools in the US. You guys are funny:): a 2400 IS NOT going to guarantee your admission to dartmouth. I know tons of people with that score who get rejected every year.

Oh one more question: what is your opinion on Johns Hopkins? Is it an internationally renowned institution?

Not in Europe.

I think JHU is mostly well-known in the medical communities.
