Is DECA a 'big deal' in the states?

Hi all,

I'm in grade 11 in Ontario Canada and, amongst other things, am on DECA at my high school.

My question is, how 'big' of a deal is DECA in the states, especially to Admissions Officers at colleges? In Ontario I can't say its that well-established of an organization... I'd say very few teachers in my high school of 2000 kids even know what it is, other than some 'business thing'. I hear DECAs taken a fair bit more seriously in the States... can anyone confirm or deny this?

Thanks guys, I appreciate any insight!

It depends. We don’t have DECA at our HS, but 2 towns over, it’s a big deal and kids even go to the Nationals.

If your school is actually good at it and wins awards, it means more than if you simply participate. Further, if you have a leadership role and you actually do something meaningful with that leadership role, it looks just as good as any other leadership role.

It’s really the same as any other competition - it depends on how much you commit to it and how well you do.

What’s DECA? (and I guess it’s not a big deal in the states)
