Is deposit to resident hall refundable? Substance free dorms?

Two questions:

is a deposit on a residence hall for an undergrad new freshman, fall 2008, refundable is the student decides not to attend IU?

are there any substance free, or ‘quiet’ dorms at IU?

I believe the deposit is refundable up until around June 1st, when you are asked to formalize your acceptance. (Actually you formalize by May 1st for the school--but you have up until June 1st for housing--don't ask me why--I have no idea?).

I think the most likely "quiet" (and substance-free) dorm would be the Fitness and Wellness Living Learning Center.

As far as substance abuse, illegal drugs and alcohol are officially not allowed at any of the dorms, of course. It's just that there are some dorms where they are more likely to be used than others. (But I'm sure you already know that.)

Oh, and just so I'm clear--alcohol is not permitted in the dorms even for students that are of legal age (21 and over).

If you decide not to attend you get everything back except for $100.

And as for the dorms, the fitness and wellness center is in Briscoe, which is a party dorm. I would suggest looking in the Central or Southeast neighborhoods.

from the housing contract:

". . . . If you submitted the $300 advance payment, $100 shall be retained as a non-refundable application fee." A cancellation fee shall be imposed as follows:

A. For contracts starting August 27, 2008:
1. If your written request to cancel is received by July 1, 2008 (or June 1, 2008 continuing residents only), there will be no cancellation fee. If you submitted the $300 payment, you will be refunded or credited $200.

If your written request to cancel is received between July 2 and August 26, 2008 (or between June 2 and August 26, 2008 for continuing residents only), the cancellation fee is $200 and you will be refunded or credited $0.

So it looks like $200 dollars is the maximum refund and IU has to receive the written request to cancel by July 1; with written requests to cancel received by IU after that date, no money is refunded at all.

Technically, alcohol isn't allowed in any of the dorms except a select few like Eigenmann (but you have to be 21 of course).
If you're looking for a quiet dorm, I'd highly recommend getting a single in Ashton. The southeast neighborhood is a good option too, depending on your major and where your classes are. Southeast would be quiet, but Ashton is in Central so the location is nice. And just because you don't have a roommate does not mean you won't make friends because I have a lot of friends at Ashton who all hang out with eachother on the same floor.

Is ashton all singles? Do music students go there?

does anyone know where the music students usually live?

where are the music practice spaces, central, SE, or...?

I would guess most music students live in the SE because they are a bit closer to the school of Music. Second is probably Central.

According to the website all the dorms have music practice rooms except Collins and Foster.

For the OP that was wondering about quiet hours--here's the best I can do to help you out. Your best bet is to call.

thanks a bunch. Calling is always a good idea. But I feel better armed after a quick talk in CC. :)
