Hello there, I go to a private school that uses the IB curriculum in junior and senior year. I’m currently a sophomore, however several friends of mine that are juniors often tell me of the extreme difficulty of the IB courses. On the other hand, I’ve been told that IB courses will benefit me in college, as I will already be adjusted to a difficult workload. I’m wondering if I should go to a school with an AP curriculum, or stick with the IB to help me later during college. Thanks for your time.
It may depend on your academic interests and which IB subjects are offered in HL versus SL.
For example, if your interests are mostly in math and science, but the school offers only SL in those subjects, its IB program may not be a good fit for you.
If the idea of a difficult curriculum doesn’t appeal to you, skip IB. Both AP and IB will prepare you for college.
As you are in Texas, your class rank is where the magic happens, you need to know how these choices impact that, is IB weighted, will it only be IB kids who actually rank, is the iBD the only most rigorous option vs AP/IBC. If you switch schools, how will that impact your rank.
This is a common question in the IB subforum: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/international-baccalaureate-ib/
IB definitely prepares you for college level work.
Also, you can get many credits for doing the diploma.
For example, my DD went to SUNY Binghamton.
“Students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program may receive up to 32 credits. To receive the full 32 credits, the following conditions must be met:
The IB Diploma must be completed with a score of 30 or more points; and
The student must complete at least three Higher Level exams with a score of 5 or higher.
Diploma holders who meet these conditions receive credit for their individual exam scores plus additional liberal arts elective credit to total 32 credits.”
She ended up graduating a year and a half early (with a couple summer/winter session courses).
