My parents seem to think that Emory is a waste of money because “no one” has heard of it on the east coast. I really want to attend this college but I need help convincing my parents that it’s worth the costs (we don’t qualify for financial aid). Tips and advice are welcome.
I know that Emory is Top 20 in the ranking and all that stuff but it’s just that I live in the Northeast and literally nobody here knows about Emory and when I tell them I’m going to Emory, they are all like “Cool…where is that again?” i’ve no doubt that Emory is a good school but I’m getting a bit frustrated that i need to explain to people all the time where Emory is.
Plenty of folks from the Northeast that know good college, know Emory. But, the reality is that the average Joe just knows the schools in their state, the Ivies, and universities that are sports powerhouses. Don’t worry about what average people think. It is a great school providing a top notch education and good outcomes.
Here is the reality, besides HYPSM you are hit and miss on name recognition. LAC’s are especially this way and definitely are only know regionally. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great schools and since you applied and got accepted than I think you know its worth it. Now, lets see,…where is Emory?
thank you all for replying! i definitely believe that Emory is a great school and i was really happy when I got accepted there. Now i’m just trying to convince my parents that Emory is worth the money. They are somewhat conservative and hope that I attend a name-brand school. Also, one of my best friends got into Georgetown and everybody knows about it…I thought Emory and Georgetown are on par…why is there a big difference in name recognition…
Not that I personally give much weight to rankings, why don’t you show your parents that in the USNews rankings Emory is tied with Georgetown and ranks about BC, BU, and UNC.
Most people think Stanford is an Ivy League college. Back home (New York), I regularly ran into people who know nothing about my school, Northwestern University.
OP, anyone who will have any sort of meaningful impact on your career will know about Emory University. It’s a great school.
Why not let them read up on Emory rather than try to educate them with what you already know. Let them read and learn. Emory is well known, even in the NE, unless you live under a rock.
How many non college educated people know the difference between:
Penn and Penn State?
University of Washington and Washington University?
University of Miami and Miami University?
Go out to a blue collar area in the Midwest and ask about Brown or Dartmouth…
Go out to a redneck area in the South and ask about CalTech
Gauge the reaction you get in NYC if you mention Temple
Then try Emory or say Rice …
Most people know college sports not college “prestige”
