Is Emory a waste of money?

My parents seem to think that Emory is a waste of money because “no one” has heard of it on the east coast. I really want to attend this college but I need help convincing my parents that it’s worth the costs (we don’t qualify for financial aid). Tips and advice are welcome.

I know that Emory is Top 20 in the ranking and all that stuff but it’s just that I live in the Northeast and literally nobody here knows about Emory and when I tell them I’m going to Emory, they are all like “Cool…where is that again?” i’ve no doubt that Emory is a good school but I’m getting a bit frustrated that i need to explain to people all the time where Emory is.

??

You get some replies, it just may take a day or two. :-c

@Goforthestar

What are your academic and career goals?

What kind of collegiate environment do you favor?

Of the schools that admitted you, which ones do your parents look upon as “worth it” or as prestigious/desirable?

Plenty of folks from the Northeast that know good college, know Emory. But, the reality is that the average Joe just knows the schools in their state, the Ivies, and universities that are sports powerhouses. Don’t worry about what average people think. It is a great school providing a top notch education and good outcomes.

Here is the reality, besides HYPSM you are hit and miss on name recognition. LAC’s are especially this way and definitely are only know regionally. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great schools and since you applied and got accepted than I think you know its worth it. Now, lets see,…where is Emory?

thank you all for replying! i definitely believe that Emory is a great school and i was really happy when I got accepted there. Now i’m just trying to convince my parents that Emory is worth the money. They are somewhat conservative and hope that I attend a name-brand school. Also, one of my best friends got into Georgetown and everybody knows about it…I thought Emory and Georgetown are on par…why is there a big difference in name recognition…

btw…how does Emory compare to schools like BC, BU, and UNC???

Not that I personally give much weight to rankings, why don’t you show your parents that in the USNews rankings Emory is tied with Georgetown and ranks about BC, BU, and UNC.

*above BC, BU and UNC.

i know Emory is higher on the ranking but more people in my area have heard of BC, BU, and UNC…it’s that the same in where you live?

Most people think Stanford is an Ivy League college. Back home (New York), I regularly ran into people who know nothing about my school, Northwestern University.

OP, anyone who will have any sort of meaningful impact on your career will know about Emory University. It’s a great school.

Speak their language:

Tell them it’s at the level of Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon and Notre Dame. Have they heard of those schools?

they have…everybody in my school and in my town knows about Georgetown and Carnegie Mellon…btw i go to a prep school near Boston…

well maybe those two will help put Emory into a more proper place in their eyes.

yea that’s a good idea…but why tho…why do people know more about Georgetown and CMU than Emory…if they are on par…

Why not let them read up on Emory rather than try to educate them with what you already know. Let them read and learn. Emory is well known, even in the NE, unless you live under a rock.

How many non college educated people know the difference between:
Penn and Penn State?
University of Washington and Washington University?
University of Miami and Miami University?

Go out to a blue collar area in the Midwest and ask about Brown or Dartmouth…

Go out to a redneck area in the South and ask about CalTech

Gauge the reaction you get in NYC if you mention Temple
Then try Emory or say Rice …

Most people know college sports not college “prestige”

Rankings meh don’t put a ton of umph behind those especially for normal careers aka “anything stopping at UG”.

Yea thx!
