Is Emory well-known in the Northeast?

My parents seem to think that Emory is a waste of money because “no one” has heard of it on the east coast. I really want to attend this college but I need help convincing my parents that it’s worth the costs (we don’t qualify for financial aid). Tips and advice are welcome.

I know that Emory is Top 20 in the ranking and all that stuff but it’s just that I live in the Northeast and literally nobody here knows about Emory and when I tell them I’m going to Emory, they are all like “Cool…where is that again?” i’ve no doubt that Emory is a good school but I’m getting a bit frustrated that i need to explain to people all the time where Emory is.

?

Yes Emory is well known in the northeast. Where else were you accepted? FYI- you need to give people a little longer to respond.

Is it affordable? Does it offer the program of study you want? Did you like the visit and, more importantly, do you think you will fit in there? Put forth your ‘argument’ for your parents- pros and cons. I also suggest you / your parents have a chat with career services to check out the alumni base in your area, potential for internships at Emory or in your local area, outcomes for current and past students at Emory. This is one of the things that swung our ‘where is that’ college pendulum to a definite Yes! We are from the northeast also and are facing similar reactions from friends and ‘experts’. Good luck!

are you a student at Emory? I’ve never met any Emory alum in my region but since i kinda live in the middle of nowhere so I expected that. but still my teachers are very happy for me but then none of my friends knows about Emory at all. I’ve not yet decided what to study. I’m leaning toward business.

the people I think you are talking to are the people that only know the names of top 10 schools and ivy’s?

emory is a great school because it has strong alumni

No, I’m not a student! I’m a mom of 4, one of whom has already graduated college, and a son who just signed his deposit yesterday at a school in the mid west that not many of our friends in the Northeast have heard of either. There is way too much emphasis on name brand / prestige when it comes to college choice, IMO. I think your parents might be a little more inclined to listen if you gave them the pros and cons of Emory, perhaps vs another college that they think is more prestigious. Have you been accepted at any other schools? Have you received merit $$ anywhere?

thank you all for replying! i definitely believe that Emory is a great school and i was really happy when I got accepted there. Now i’m just trying to convince my parents that Emory is worth the money. They are somewhat conservative and hope that I attend a name-brand school. Also, one of my best friends got into Georgetown and everybody knows about it…I thought Emory and Georgetown are on par…why is there a big difference in name recognition…

Another school that I’m considering is WashU but then again nobody knows about it…i don’t care that much about prestige but i feel pressure from my peers…

@Goforthestar

Emory is one of the few top 20 undergrad institutions that offers a bachelors in business through its business school.

You can read about the BBA in business at Emory’s Goizueta School of Business here - employer recruiting, coursework, internships, etc.
http://goizueta.emory.edu/degree/undergraduate/

Bloomberg recently ranked Emory’s undergrad business program higher than both UPenn’s and Georgetown’s:
https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-best-undergrad-business-schools/

Georgetown has Division I athletics (Emory is Division III) and a nationally known and historically successful basketball program.

If you go over to the Georgetown board, you will see current students share some commonly felt gripes about the undergrad program there.

btw…how does Emory compare to schools like BC, BU, and UNC???

Where do your parents prefer?

I think it’s more prestigious than BU and BC… but UNC’s one of the best public schools in the nation so picking between the 2 is just a matter of fit.

i prefer Emory but my parents think BC and BU are more well-known…

Emory in no way compares to BU. Emory is way better than BU in virtually every sense.

what about BC and UCSD?

I’m not from east or south, and around here (Midwest) none of the schools you list are well known except UNC, and that’s about basketball. From what I understand, Emory would be a much stronger school than BU. But if your parents don’t agree and they are paying, this may be a hard sell.

Oh Thx…Can you guys all talk a little bit about how Emory, BC, BU, WashU, and UNC are viewed in your area/state?

I’d say the ranking in NY:

  1. BC
  2. BU
    3)Emory
  3. UNC
  4. Wash U

Name recognition doesn’t mean anything though.

The average person is not familiar with a Harvey Mudd or a Williams or a CMC or a Pomona and yet these are all fantastic schools.

that’s about the same for the general public at my town…everybody knows about BC and BU…
