Is Financial Aid Impossible for OOS?

UCSD is my D's top choice but we are OOS. Her stats should get her in but we can not afford full price. Our EFC is $3,654.00. With the mess that CA is in financially is there any hope of aid for OOS? Did anyone get aid that is from OOS in past years?

I sympathize with you, but don't have any advice yet. D is a junior, I'm a single dad (with a younger son in 5th grade) and d wants to study anywhere but Ohio! My good friend's d left Ohio for Univ of Michigan and that family was told that OOS students get very little money without a hook, a legacy or something really special.

By contrast, however, our public school's valedictorian received 100% awards both from Vanderbilt (where he is attending) and Emory, but was dissed by Duke. It's a crapshoot I'm afraid!

SVmom:

is the comma in the correct spot? In any event, yes, UC does provide finaid to OOS kids. BUT, UC finaid is not good for instate -- even with an efc of zero, one is expected to pay $9k. For OOS, UC will NOT waive the OOS portion of the tuition/fees, unless a Regent's scholar (which are extremely competitive -- Cal has a culture of of high test scorers).

IMO, at $45k UC is not a good value for OOS. Many privates offer a much better deal. UVa is the only top public that offers good need-based aid to OOS kids. UNC has a total COA that is much less, however.

Yep, you read that right. EFC is $3,654.00. Lots of years of unemployment has wiped us out.

Understand.

But, for a quick assessment, assume that your efc is zero. Then your D will be expected to come up with $9k in self-help (loans, workstudy and summer earnings). The rest is in grants, but Calif. has a statewide program called Cal Grants which pays a portion of that amount for residents. Dunno what the UCs do for OOS kids.

It's my understanding that the UCs will not waive nor provide grants for the OOS portion of the fees, i.e., $20k. Thus, your D (and you) should plan on a family contribution of approx. $29k of the $46k COA.

btw: do NOT miss the finaid deadline for UC. If you do, grants will be gone.

Good luck.
