Any scholarship or financial aid available in UCSD or UC Berkeley for OOS?

I tried Net Price Estimator on UCSD and UCBerkeley but the out of pocket is just too high 54K for out-of-state. I also do not see much of scholarships available, either. Should I still encourage my daughter to try any of these schools? We live in TX. Income: 130k

Please help!

Thanks a bunch!

Only if you can afford full pay.

Would you buy lottery? Knowing that the chances of winning are nil or very very small.

My daughter was “set” on a California college until we realized how impossible the net price would be for all UCs. She is applying to some private colleges where the net price calculators show a decent about of financial aid. The state of California has zero incentive to make UCs affordable for OOS students. Them’s the breaks…

This is a useful thread on this topic: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-colleges/1802004-so-you-want-to-come-to-california-for-college-p1.html

The UC’s are publicly-funded by California state residents with really high taxes, so the priority for funding goes to instate residents. There is little to no financial aid for non-residents.

Rarely, they can get a Regent’s scholarship but it isn’t likely and you can’t count on it. Otherwise the UC are need focused for lower income and you likely don’t have need by their standards.

Public univs charge a high OOS rate because you don’t pay taxes there. the Calif tax-payers aren’t going to spend their tax dollars on reducing costs for OOS students.

You can imagine…the Calif taxpayers would be quite upset by that.

There are some other states’ publics that give merit scholarships for stats

Thanks so much for the immediate responses I got from you guys! You all are awesome! We wil look at USC and other private schools on the east coast.

There are other CA privates where your daughter might get merit aid…if she really wants to go to college in CA.

@thumper1 which CA privates are you talking about?

How much can you pay?

ACT: Composite: 30 (E: 31, M:31, R:25 S:34)
SAT 2’s: I’m taking Math 2 and French on October 3rd, I expect in each 700+
TOEFL iBT: 111/120

(I will retake the ACT on October 24th and I believe I can get my score up to 33/34. (I continuously scored 33,34,35 on my practice tests.) )

To meet the Early Action Deadline, I thought I’d apply with my 30 ACT and immediately send the scores from the later test date.)

  • I'm currently taking a Gap Year. At the moment, I'm helping my parents to build their business in Colorado and I'm doing community service. I plan to volunteer as tutor in Asia sometime between January and August 2016 and I want to self-study for AP Statistics, AP Calc, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics to earn college credit.

I will apply for Financial Aid.

Income Bracket: Under 60’000 $

If it has to be, I’m willing to take out loans
(The schools treat me regarding financial aid like a US citizen, because I’m a permanent resident.)

many schools will not use test scores taken AFTER high school graduation…particularly for merit.

When did you get the ACT 30?

Businesses don’t bode well for aid for CSS Profile schools, so be aware of that.

You can’t borrow much…you can borrow:

5500 frosh
6500 soph
7500 jr
7500 sr

Why is she so set on California?
There are lots of schools, that are not in California that would give her funding.

The problem with California schools, public and private, are the housing costs. Tuition is high but if she wants to be near a large city area, she’s gonna pay beaucoup bucks!

The privates like Santa Clara, USC, Chapman, Loyola, USD, Pt. Loma Nazarene, Mills, Pepperdine, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, etc. they DO have financial aid packages, but the costs are initially so sky high that you end up paying a “regular” tuition price after the financial aid goes through (which ain’t much of a discount!). So, plan on initial costs of $65+K per year at these colleges and hope that they can give some aid.

Can you even take AP exams after you’ve graduated from high school during a Gap year?!

Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks has a cool program where if you’re admitted to certain UC campuses, they’ll hold to cost of Cal Lutheran down to what an in-state student would pay at a UC, even if you’re an out-of-state student. I think it was UCLA, UCSB, UCB, UCSD and UCD that qualified.

If you want to attend university in California, and you have Colorado residency, look into the WUE exchange. Some of the Cal States participate and you can go for 1.5x in state tuition. http://www.wiche.edu/wue

I think this student is looking for a lot of aid and can’t pay much…so paying 150% of tuition PLUS room, board and books won’t work.

WUE works best for those who can be full pay.

Berkeley Regents scholarships upgrade the financial aid package by replacing the student contribution (loans and work study) with additional scholarship and covering the out-of-state additional tuition for those with financial need (net price will be the FAFSA EFC).

Berkeley also has a Drake scholarship that is a full ride for mechanical engineering majors.

Obviously, getting any of the above is far more competitive than getting admitted.
