Is fordham good for premed?? and other questions

OK so I am looking at fordham because I got a "Your Choice" application, and I did some research on it. 1. I like the location, in NYC. 2. I read that it is good for pre-med because it is very hard and it makes you well rounded. (is this true?)

AND is the "choice" application good? does it give an edge over a regular app?

thanks

ALSO is there a lot of commuting? I read something about travelling from bronx to manhattan very often

You’ll have an introductory-level knowledge in many subjects. Don’t expect the core to make you an expert on everything; it introduces you to many disciplines, and you’ll able to drop names at fancy doctor parties if you go to med school.

“Very Hard” is subjective. If you want the hardest major available, go to Cooper Union, Berkeley engineering, Caltech, etc (i.e., engineering schools). But if you’re premed, don’t pick the hardest curriculum available. The chances of it doing you good [if you get straight-As it MIGHT help if you have many or difficult classes] are much lower than the chances of it hurting your application [if you can’t handle the work and don’t get a high enough GPA]. Fordham is rigorous enough to prepare you very well for medical school itself; consider that the dean of Stanford Med is a Fordham grad.

The “Your Choice” app is, I think, just more convenient than the normal app. Such free/easy applications exist because the more people apply to Fordham, the higher the school can be ranked.

Your last question doesn’t really make sense. It takes about 40min to get to Midtown and 50min to get to the Village via subway. Grand Central is about a half-hour away via Metro-North.

The good news is kids in the pre-med program have an acceptance rate into medical schools of 90%. The bad news is that it is a demanding program and you will spend a good amount of time in the library and the lab to be in the pre-med program. It is a serious goal and if you are up to the task and get good grades, you will have a very good shot at getting into medical school. In addition, you will take many different courses as is required at a Jesuit school and it will make you a well rounded scholar: something med schools like to see.

I think you misunderstood about the travel between the Bronx and Manhatan. Fordham has 3 different campuses, the 2 main ones being in the Bronx and Manhattan. If you select Fordham College, you will live at the Rose Hill campus where all the labs are so will not have to commute (uless you want to see Manhattan). If you select the Lincoln Center campus, you will have to take some classes at Rose Hill as a pre-med. Fordham runs shuttles called RamVans between the campuses on a regular basis, so no issue.

thanks for you replies! I hope I get accepted :P

Pre-Med is hard wherever you go. Also, unless you make LC your home campus you wont do alot of commuting between campuses. Most pre-meds are in the Bronx campus since that’s where all the labs and most science classes are.
