Fordham full tuition v. Stony Brook Honors full tuition

Hey, so I seem to have found myself down to two schools to pick from, both of which are outstanding offers. I plan on doing a premed track, but I am not quite yet 100% sure I want to go into medical school.

Something about Fordham just made me like the school campus better, although the strict policies and more extensive core also makes me favor Stony Brook. I've also heard plenty of people tell me how unvibrant Stony Brook is on weekends due to the heavy commuter population, and although Fordham's student body has a large number of commuters as well, being in New York City works towards certain advantages.

Academics wise, Stony Brook is giving me the better offer, being admitted into a highly regarded Honors College. For premed, I've heard that Stony Brook's program is better and more widely known, but Fordham's program is more intimate (in terms of number of premed students) and has a higher admit % into medical schools. In addition, I believe if I ever decided not to do premed, Fordham would offer me better career opportunities.

Finally, again, both of these schools have offered me full tuition scholarships, so the high price of Fordham is not an issue.

I appreciate any feedback and opinions offered. Thank you very much.

Stony Brook is better for pre-med, but trust me, I basically lived on that campus lol I took a couple of classes there as a junior and although some of my professors were nice, the administration faculty is nasty and there’s a lot of cutthroat competition among the student body. I got into an accelerated 7 yr med program thank god, but I know that if I had chose to go to stony brook I would be spending 8 yrs in unhappiness, but that’s just me.

Congratulations on both of your excellent offers! It sounds to me like you liked Fordham a little better and to be honest, I think a gut feeling is enough to go on!

Don’t worry so much about the core! While there are a large number of classes to take, many of them count for more than one core requirement. Plus, you might end up developing interests in other areas.

Yes, Fordham is Jesuit and so there are some policies that are stricter than the secular SUNY, but Catholic or not, many people admire the Jesuit principles of education for the whole person in mind, body and spirit and of service to others.

I think if you come to Fordham you will be part of a wonderful campus community and really enjoy all the benefits of having NYC as your playground! Best of luck!

Thanks for the replies!

@piano: Yes I’ve heard similar things about the premed competition at Stony as well, although when I visited the Honors College program I heard something totally different. They told me there was practically no competition or tension, at least between the Honors College members. Have you experienced anything similar?

@sandkmom: I’ll be honest. Yes, I did like Fordham better, especially the location in NYC, but really when I looked into the academics of it, it favored Stony Brook so much that I was no longer 100% sure I wanted to go to Fordham like I was before. Thank you for mentioning that piece about the core, though, I didn’t know that and it was very helpful!
