I researched this college and I've decided to apply RD, but is it really worth the cost? and if so, how prestigious is it?

From your original post, it seems like Hamilton was a last minute addition to your list. With this in mind, if you are serious about Hamilton you should attempt to interview. I don’t know if you’ve missed the deadline for on-campus, but off-campus (including video/skype) interviews are always an option. Hamilton takes this component of the application very seriously.

Secondly, you seem concerned about price. If you cannot afford Hamilton, you can still attend. (Hamilton offers need-blind admission and pledges to meet 100% of student need). Otherwise, all schools in the top 50 range will charge a similar price…Hamilton provides students with excellent academics, no doubt. As a caveat, although ranking systems are inherently flawed, Hamilton has continually increased in rank…now it’s the 14th best LAC. Hamilton is currently “hot” and we over-enrolled like crazy last year…so now there are two options–find more housing or the acceptance rate will go down–we’ll see in April. But, the real advantage of Hamilton is the connections you make. Our alumni connections are second to none. We like to hire one another, because alumni know that Hamilton students are well prepared. Whether it’s internships or your first job after you graduate, Hamilton makes sure your liberal arts degree translates into actual employment! We’ve also had some great speakers/etc visit campus including Michelle Alexander, Cornel West, Hillary Clinton, Macklemore, among others.

Hamilton is a top tier college. Whether it’s worth the price is an opinion question. As a student, this is what I’ll say–Come to Hamilton and you’ll have a great experience, learn a lot, and gain numerous opportunities unavailable at other schools. If you want to go to law school/med school/etc perhaps you should consider attending a cheaper institution, also keep in mind that Hamilton doesn’t inflate grades so, if you’re looking for a 4.0, look elsewhere.

Regardless, good luck with your college search!

Thanks that helped alot. It definitely is my first choice school, but there is one problem: i missed the deadline for off-campus interviews and only the on-campus ones are an option. However, I live in the south east and cannot travel to NY anytime soon. what should i do?

Okay, so the off-campus interview deadline was December 16th. So, that is a bummer.
If you cannot make it to NY, don’t beat yourself up. We are located in the middle of the rural Appalachians, buried under what will soon be feet of snow…we don’t expect a lot of visitors
That being said, this is what I’d do:
-Go to Hamilton’s admission page and go to Admission>Admission & Financial Staff
-Find your admissions representative–they even tell you who is in charge of your state!
-Email that admission representative and explain your predicament–something along the lines of “Hey, I really want to interview, but cannot…what are my other options”

This accomplishes a few things. First, you just established contact with the first set of eyes that will be reviewing your application. Make sure that impression is good! Second, you’ll get an answer to your question–they will probably encourage you to submit a video interview. I’m not sure whether it’s via skype or whether you record yourself answering some routine questions…although it’s certainly not as ideal as an on-campus interview, it’s better than nothing. It also shows your commit to Hamilton, an essential part of the application.

I will add that it is possible to be admitted without an interview (I was!) But, the vast majority of applicants will interview. Regardless, make sure you indicate that Hamilton is at the top of your list, why Hamilton is at the top of your list, what Hamilton can offer you, and perhaps most importantly, what you can offer Hamilton.

Hope this helped!

Ah thanks! It helped alot, and I sent an email to Hamilton. Again, thanks!

You may be able to do a video interview.
