My son has several credits from community college (maybe 9 that will actually be able to be transferred). He has taken coursework toward a web design certificate along with an English, Math and a few other computer apps courses. Our family is considering relocating to North Carolina and he is interested in UNC Asheville.

My question is - can he apply as a freshman even though he already has some college credits, or is he automatically considered a transfer candidate? It seems that most universities are looking for 24 credits to be eligble to transfer. He would be willing to start over again and take the math, english etc, without getting any credit for the work he completed at community college. He had a mediocre high school record - 820 SAT's and a 2.5 GPA. His college record is really no better, but the relocation may allow him to concentrate more on school and in a university setting, would be surrounded by peers that were more supportive of his education than he finds now.
