Hey,
Currently I'm a freshman at Appalachian State University who has applied to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill. I got a 1200/ 1820 on the SAT, had about a 3.9 in High School, and a 3.5 GPA my first semester in college, including a B+ in Spanish 1040. I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what my chances are for getting in, I should be recieving word around April 25 but the anticipation is killing me. I think I wrote a really good 250 word essay, and I played about 5 intramural sports first semester.
Thank you,
Joe

Also, I placed out of English classes with AP credit from High School and am currently taking a higher level math class for a freshman MAT 1030.

Idk, I heard UNC is raising the level for transfer students. Its possible, but I think it'll be tough to get in. I don't know how your SAT is for UNC standards, but to have a good chance I would think you would need to improve it significantly (100+ points)

Where did you hear that?

They're increasing the number of students they accept as transfers this year (at least from NC CCs). You may be right but where did you hear this?

Tell them you have mascot experience. Auto admit :)

LaxAttack09- that is terrible but the funniest thing I've heard on these boards. I heard about raised levels from a guide when I visited UNC with a friend. Not to say that my tour guide was an expert, but thats just what she said. Could be true, might not be. just what they told me.

"Raised levels" meaning UNC will accept higher numbers of transfers, or lower numbers?

UNCjtd20, and an honest evaluation:

You have many things working against you. First, you are a freshman transfer. Apply again if rejected. Second, you have only some of the general education requirements. They want you to have most of it done (if not all). Both of my above reasons do not mean you will not get in, but remember that there are a bunch of freshman transfer applicants with high SAT's and the like (even though they do not have all the general education requirements met). Your GPA is solid, so if you do not get in, keep it over a 3.5 and apply in future. I think that they want you "specifically" (considering your application) to have about 40 college credits (or more) on your transcript.

****...well that's not really what i wanted to hear but i appreciate the honesty. I couldn't transfer after the fall 07 semester could i? I'm pretty sure my GPA will be rock solid (3.8-4.0)this current semester

By rising levels, it seemd that they meant higher standards for transfers.

yea that's what i got out of that...does it count for anything that i'll have 40 hours done by the end of this semester?

Did you write the optional essay?

Basically what it comes down to is that your stats are not overwheliming so you'll need to have a lot going for you in the way or recs/essays/ecs. Since we can't really judge that on CC, it's tough to approximate your chances.

yea i got you... i wrote the essay. i did a good amount of recs (5 intramurals 1st semester) and i enrolled in a leadership program. i know nobody will be able to say for sure if i'll get in, but i appreciate the feedback

well 40 hours will mean there will be less emphasis on your high school record and SAT scores...this will put you at an advantage over those with fewer hours that have similar scores to you.

Hey.
I'm currently a freshman at Emory and am wanting to transfer to UNC. I was accepted Early Action to UNC last year and am an in-state student. I had a 4.9 GPA in high school and lots of extracurriculars. However, I had an awful first semester at emory and only took 3 classes. I ended up with a 2.6 GPA ... nothing at all like my high school grades. What do you think my chances are? I'm really nervous. Do you think being instate/having been accepted last year/coming from Emory will help?

With a good explanation of why you got such a bad GPA you might still have a good chance.

in state/OOS doesn't matter for transfer at UNC.

Does class rank for freshman year count for transfers? If so, what's a good class rank to have for transfering in Sophomore year to UNC? What about if you've had a parent go to UNC? Does that help?

Don't know about class rank but legacy does have some bearing, someone else posted this link that is extremely helpful http://alumni.unc.edu/article.asp?SID=4774

also, will second semester grades come into play at all? my gpa is going to be killer this semester...if they typically don't look at them/ask for them could I mail my currents grades to them or something?

Maybe you should call and ask if you could follow up your app with the grades?
