Is it bad not to have taken physics in high school?

The way I'm on track with my course selections, I won't have taken any physics in high school (not even an honors level class, much less AP). Is this acceptable if I'm planning to apply to selective colleges? My plan is to have taken three credits of science -- Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, and IB Environmental Science.

I'll be receiving an IB Diploma (hopefully) and I'm doubling up on foreign language -- math and science just aren't my thing. I'll have taken AP Calc BC and IB Math HL before graduation, though.

Will skipping physics be a serious problem? Is there anyone else who won't be taking physics at all in high school?

Thanks!

I suggest you take it. I don’t know of anyone that has gone through high school that hasn’t taken some combination of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

I don’t think you need to. I’m not taking it and I know several people who aren’t either. You will be fine:)

EDIT: O, I didn’t see that your school didn’t offer APs. I would suggest you take it then because of that. Either that or you could go to your local community college and take a class that is equivalent to an AP class. Regardless, best of luck!

^ My school offers AP and IB classes – I’m just choosing to go with the IB Program. I have the option to take AP Physics in school, but I’m just not going to do it. thanks, though!

I didn’t take it. Doubled up on social studies. Still got into some good schools. Not a requirement by any means. Good luck!

I’m not taking it and I’m going into engineering(school only offers “regular level”, so i’d theoretically have to retake it in college anyways). AP Calc and Physics are actually taught simultaneously in some schools b/c they’re so closely related. So if you take AP Chem over AP Physics, it might not look well rounded, but doing well in AP Chem looks just as good. Youmight just have a little more catching up in college courses.

Well yes.
Unless you’re taking Chemistry or Biology in exchange.

There kids at my school taking 3 years of chemistry, some 2 of biology and physics.

Everyone has take at least one year of biology and one year of Chemistry(or IPC). So I guess at my school you CAN avoid taking Physics without looking lazy.

PS: I’m a diploma student too :]
But I’m taking Physics because Chemistry scared me towards the end.

I don’t see why it would be bad to not have taken physics. I myself almost didn’t take physics in replace of human anamoty, though when I discovered I wasn’t persuing the health field anymore I decided to just take physics.

Chemistry and biology are required at my school, but physics is not and many kids do not take it. Most of the people I know who have gone on to Ivies, top 20s, etc. have not taken it. They do take the required 3 units of science though, so that means they take a different science (AP Envi Sci, AP Chem, AP Bio, Anat & Phys. or the remedial sciences) instead of physics.
If you don’t want to take physics, don’t take it. I decided in 7th grade when I first entered my HS that I desperately wanted to have this certain teacher, and he happened to be the Physics teacher, so I had to take Physics.

Definitely not - unless of course, if your interests lie in science, or at least in the physical sciences (but probably not, since if you were interested, obviously you would take it).

Personally, I think it is. Because from what I’ve heard, at least one year of each basic science(bio, chem, and physics) is recommended and preferred by most top colleges, even if you are not going in to the Sciences.
