Is it better to go to an affordable college or in an area you love?

Hello! I’ve had trouble deciding what colleges I should apply for. I moved from New York to Florida about 2 years ago. I still love New York City, and I know it’s where I want to move to when I’m older. It’s the perfect place for me and I was heartbroken to move. If I go to a college in New York, the price will be even more ridiculous now that I’m out of state. However, the costs for Florida colleges are manageable. Florida isn’t my favorite place, but it isn’t terrible either. Do you think I should stay in Florida for my 4 years, or go back to New York? I know I will be happier in New York, but I still think I should think about the debt I’ll be in. Thank you!

You can go live in new york and work in new york without going to college there

Save NYC for later. If you want to actually move there, you’ll need a decent amount of money saved up. It’s an expensive place to live. Think about the bigger picture, keep yourself out of debt for 4 years, have a pleasant experience at Florida, and then financially prepare yourself for your dream.

Something that is unaffordable is generally a bad idea.

Thank you!

Think about it this way: living in NYC can really be expensive. If you are able to go to college somewhere else, you can save up that money for eventually moving to New York and living out your dream. It’s much better than the alternative and being in debt from the get-go and being unable to afford anything

I had a similar dilemma when I was applying for colleges. My family moved from New York to Atlanta when I was 12, and I desperately wanted to go back. I saw myself as a super-cosmopolitan urban girl. But for college, the cost was prohibitive. I ended up staying in Atlanta for college and moving to New York after college for graduate school.

…and then promptly got tired of New York after about 2-3 years. By year 5 I was so desperate to leave New York! LOL!

Anyway, what shawnspencer said is true - save your money and move to New York after you graduate college. You’ll enjoy it so much more when you have some money to spend on all of the things New York has to offer.

@zzealott1, what schools in NY are you interested in? Would you want to be right in the city?

Do you have good grades/SAT scores? Have you checked if you’d qualify for merit aid at any of the SUNYs or CUNYs?

Another vote for going to an affordable school in FL and moving to NYC later on. It really is the smarter route to take.

Having little money and being under 21 prevents you from doing a lot of the fun stuff in NYC.
