Is it easier for boys to get into Vassar?

I would certainly think so, considering the school is 60% female. I really really want to go to Vassar and anything that helps my chances of admission would be nice. My stats (SAT: 2140, ACT: 32, GPA: 4.2, Class Rank : 4/140, Student Body VP, tennis, internships, community service + other good extracurricular) are on par with Vassar's standards but who knows. Think I have a decent chance?

yes, guys usually have a 5-10% higher chance of getting in. I think you and I (i also applied) both have decent chances getting in, although its by no means certain. on that note, hope to see you at vassar!

a 60-40 split is fairly typical at LAC's these days.

Definitely yes. I speak from personal experience comparing kids I know. The admissions rep I spoke to denied it when I asked. Baloney. The Princeton Review states that they have a strong commitment to recruiting minorities and males.

it would seem so from the data here:
College Navigator - Vassar College
Click on ADMISSIONS and it shows 39.8% rate for males, 26.1% acceptance rate for females for Fall of 06 (despite the 40/60 ratio--it's just that so many more girls apply, of course). I'm guessing that both those acceptance rates have dropped since Fall 06 admissions, but I don't know that for a fact.

The STATS (GPA, rank, SAT) for males and females are virtually identical. If 40% of males are accepted vs 26% females, that means males as a group (though lesser in quantity) have a greater percentages of the "right" scores.

That is interesting. I actually had never considered that.

yeah!
im a male and a minority
lol

So I guess it's just less males apply, but those that do usually are outstanding, and thus more get accepted? Hmm.

That's faulty reasoning. The rejected girls may also have the right scores! and more of them are rejected.

My D and her friend, both 2100+, both excellent students, 95 + averages, great EC's blah, blah, blah were rejected whereas two male classmates, lower SAT's and GPA, fewer EC's, fewer AP's were accepted.

No bitterness. D is thriving at Barnard; friend is thriving at NYU. I think they now both prefer the city. But I am sure boys get a bump up at Vassar. Less apply; got to keep the 40% so 40% accepted.

These stats say nothing about the rejected women.

BTW: DS was accepted, but he did have 34 ACT, 2200 SAT and 97+ average, so even Sis was not unhappy with that.

yes, 60-40 splits are common at many LACs today, but the general trend in college admissions shows male applicants are lacking. Frankly, being a male helps no matter what college you apply to. Except for, perhaps, MIT or CalTech.

You have fine chances!
