Is it easier to transfer between schools if you're already attending one of the other schools in the Claremont network. The reason being, I really want to take Accounting at Claremont cause they have an amazing program, but I don't think I have the grades to get in right now
(3.6 Weighted, 2190 SAT).

So I was thinking I could apply to Pitzer and get in fairly easily and then within a year (two if need be) transfer to CMC. Is there any merit behind thinking it will be easier to transfer in?

Actually it is more challenging to transfer within the Claremont Colleges. While their first-year pools are very selective (CMC around 16%, Pitzer around 20%), their transfer pools are extremely selective. I would not count on it at all.

I go to CMC…taking classes at the other Cs is super easy, just a matter of if there is space in the class…and if you want you can major off campus (though it does require some paperwork I believe)…the schools are so close you barely realize you aren’t on your “home” campus

Apply to both.
Transferring is like applying for college for the first time. The problem with transferring, is that you will still need to establish relationships with your professors etc at your previous institution to receive letters of recommendations. I don’t know how competitive Claremont will be for transferring in the years to come, but I know that they substantially dropped their acceptance rate for the 2009 year from the 2008 year. I think in the 2008 year they accepted like 30 percent of its applicants, and 2009 year they accepted less than 10 percent if I’m not mistaken. You won’t have an advantage, nor will it be easier to transfer from one claremont school to the other. Its the same process someone from NYU or USC or any other school will have to deal with. Your best bet if you want Claremont, is to go to the best school you can get into and in which you don’t mind staying there if you cant get in to Claremont after applying as a transfer, and aim for a gpa of 3.6 or higher. Don’t use Pitzer or any other school as a means to Claremont, because you will be extremely dissapointed if you don’t end up getting accepted as a transfer and will be stuck at your institution, and if you hate that institution you’d regret picking one that you didn’t like.

I don’t think your stats are out of league for Claremont, you just have to really highlight everything else to minimize the attention to your gpa. However if your lower gpa is because of an upward trend since 9th grades, I’m sure CMC will be willing to look beyond this.

Lastly, accounting is accounting. You can probably learn this at schools that may not be Claremont, what will matter is what you do outside of academics to eventually prepare you for the work force.

I go to Pomona and one of the admissions counselors here was asked the same question (except obviously referring to Pomona). He basically said that it’s harder to transfer in from one of the other 5Cs (5 Claremont Colleges) because students at those college can already access the resources at Pomona. I’m assuming that CMC’s admissions office takes a similar stance.

So the bottom line: Do not go to Pitzer in the hopes of transferring to CMC. If you like Pitzer, then great, go there and take some classes at CMC. But definitely do not go there with the intention of transferring to CMC.
