Is it easy to switch my major?

I got accepted into the major of Biochemistry at UCLA but now I'm doubting that and want to major in either General Biology or Physiology. I read that it' possible to switch majors during orientation but do you think it would be difficult for me to do so? I'm not sure if those two majors are impacted but I'm sure I want to major in either one. Any help?

I don’t know specifically about switching between those majors, but I thought I would share my situation which relates. I named psychobiology as my major of choice and neuroscience as my alternate. After chatting with some current students I decided that I would prefer neuro, so I emailed the neuro department undergrad advisor. He told me that he handles major switches on a case to case basis. He said they don’t allow non-life science majors to transfer in, and it sounds like if the majors are similar in subject matter and prereq preparation, then it should be easier. All of that said, general bio looks pretty damn impacted from last year’s stats. Physio on the other hand is less impacted than biochem, so you might stand a better chance there. I would shoot them an email and ask. They probably won’t give you any definite answers until you are admitted though.

I’m a 2nd year at UCLA and it’s definitely fine if you want to switch your major. If you’re a freshman, at orientation, they offer you the chance to switch your major, granted that you aren’t trying to switch from the college of letters and sciences to the school of engineering or something.

Biochem is a physical science though, while gen bio and physio are life science majors. However, the pre-reqs for bio chem (chem, math, physics, etc) will also count as lower div reqs for physio and bio. So it’s easy for you to switch, however if you start the chem 14 series and math 3 series (the pre-reqs for gen bio and physio), that won’t allow you to switch to biochem until you restart the series. So choose wisely!

4th yr Biochem:I know plenty of people who have switched out of biochemistry to other majors like psychobio. It’s not too difficult to switch majors in the college of letters and sciences UNLESS it’s into physci which has been trying to cut people out of the major. Like dance93 has implied, there are complications with the physical sciences and life sciences having different chem series. (physics isn’t a problem as you have the option of choosing the 6 series) I know people who have finished one of the series and been able to switch majors while keeping the credits (although if you go from 14 to 20 series you may need to take 30BL). I am not so familiar with trying to switch while in the middle of your chem series. You should check with Murphey Hall or your major counselor for the details
