I have a 3.85 gpa and a 1470 sat but last year I didn’t do any ap classes. I go to the number one high school in my state and it is a blue ribbon school and it is super competitive. I just got kind of stressed out and convinced myself I was stupid but apparently I’m not because I got an A in Ap Econ and only one question wrong on the math part of the sat. I still feel kind of clueless compared to the geniuses in my school. I am full pay if that helps in any way. Do you think I have a chance or is it not even worth applying to?I would appreciate honesty, you can be extremely straight forward I have already been emotionally crushed by my college counselor.Thanks.
If you want it go after it! Showing a strong clear interest is the first step - good luck
If you submit by tomorrow night, you are eligible for the Johnson Scholarship (and other merit aid, possibly). It is a REALLY nice college. VERY student-focused and attracts great students. Go for it!
Go for it! You have a relatively good shot here.
If you really like it, why not? I think the college counselors try not to get students’ hopes up and sometimes downplay their chances.
Also, if you like W&L, why not consider Sewanee? Your stats will get you in there, and it has the same feel as W&L. Good luck, and don’t be so hard on yourself. Counselors have lots of kids to pay attention to (that is what I keep telling myself!).
I did consider Sewanee but the dress code requirement kind of dis-interested me. I probably would dress up everyday anyway because I only own one sweatshirt and dress up for school but I don’t know. I recently have been looking at Rhodes. I just can’t gauge how much my SAT helps me. It is above the average but does that mean anything?I didn’t do AP classes last year but my high school is really really difficult. I feel like they should weigh that more because my school is a blue ribbon school whatever that means. I am considering dropping out of an AP class right now and I study so much for it. For one quiz on two chapters I studied for over 6 hours and got a 50 so I don’t know how long I can handle it. I know the big concepts but my teacher puts on random intricate details that are not even in the textbook. I feel like I am smart but my grades don’t show it. I got a 790 on the math part of the sat but I am only in normal calc.It is still really hard but I feel like colleges will think that I’m lazy so I hope my SAT shows that I’m not.But at this point I am just really hopeless.
Hi there. I am by no means an expert, but my son(WLU freshman) was looking at the same schools you are. He made a 33 ACT score but never did the SAT. We were looking for scholarships. He attended a top public school that had an IB program but we did AP because IB at his school is ridiculously hard. Even then, he didn’t have straight A’s. What I tried to do was to apply to schools where he would be at the top end of the average student as far as ACT/SAT scores. Rhodes, Sewanee, W &L, among others. He really wanted Rhodes. He got money from every school he applied (except U of Virginia) but Washington and Lee gave him almost full tuition. He did not get the Johnson. We did visit but it was a quick trip; we did the interview locally which may have been better for him maybe? The others were about $5000 a year less compared to W &L… Thank God that we chose W & L- it is so great. He loves it, and I sure do love going to that adorable town. The whole area is amazing; I never feel there is enough time. All of his friends are sharp kids, and all the students are competitive and involved on campus. He does seem to have to study a lot though, but he thinks it’s just adjusting to a new school. I think you should go for it.
@downtowndoll I am curious as you said you got almost full tuition at WL but not the Johnson? Our son has very similar stats , will not qualify for financial aid, and would love to attend WL but seemed like the merit $ is either Johnson or nothing? And I don’t think any of the other schools he applied to will offer much in terms of merit. Hoping that isn’t the case. Congrats to your son ! and to the OP-I would definitely apply-have you shown interest? Our son did a few visits-local presentations and on campus as well as the interview. I think that helps.
As I understand it, there is the full Johnson, but there is also a lot of merit money given out after that. Your student has to apply for the Johnson. @00110011, we went to visit over Thanksgiving. I had read about the “dress code” at Sewanee, but the kids looked pretty normal to me. I saw guys wearing khakis and jeans, and girls wearing jeans and leggings. It was cold.
ya the Sewanee dress code is not all that dressy. Sure some guys wear a jacket but I mostly see khakis and jeans with a button down or polo type shirt. Also though it’s certainly not shorts, t-shirt and a ball cap either.
@bluebird17 From what I understand, it is merit from W & L. I’ve read a lot online about W & L’s huge endowment fund. We had an EFC of $20,0000, yet we are just really paying room and board plus $1000 per year. (Weird how W & L couldn’t give us $1000 more! Oh well. )
And that’s how we compared schools- we were already having to pay up to $12,000 a year for our state Univ. room and board. We are pretty far away from W & L. We got our notice of merit award rather late, in March. It was an excruciating April trying to decide between $5000 extra (Rhodes and all the others gave us about same amount) a year. It’s like the private schools think you will bite because $18,000 or so is what you would pay for a state school if you didn’t have a scholarship.
I applied, just hoping I get accepted but not expecting anything!
I think you have a great chance- my son’s school is very highly regarded although it’s an inner city type of high school. It’s really hard in the upper level classes. Sounds similar to your school. He’s a different, creative, non-preppy kid and I personally think that helped him. He beat out some other kids from the best prep school in town who I know had more well-rounded resumes (lots of sports and meaningless activities). His school was very competitive as far as leadership positions, so we tried to pick things he was really interested in and work on that. He did start a club at school- which I think many students overlook as an idea to make you stand out. Many know to do that but are just lazy. All the resumes look the same. We did have a sport he did- ultimate frisbee(lol). Show interest in the school - YOU will need to be in charge of the phone or email contacts, not your parents.
