Is it frowned upon to not mention your class rank on transcript? (Specifically in Texas)

Hi y’all! I study in Texas and I’ve seen that the top 10% students in the class are required to state class rank on their transcript. But many schools offer the 11%-100% students an option to not mention their class rank. I am not proud of my class rank as it’s in second quarter due to various reasons, and I’m wondering if the school I apply to will frown upon and immediately discard my application into the rejected section. What do y’all think, should I or should I not mention my class rank?

Thank you

@Crowno If your transcript does not list a rank, A&M will provide you one. They will use your GPA and the grading profile used by your school which will be sent with your transcript. This is what they do for schools that do not rank. You will have a rank, one way or another. Your class rank is not strong but lets look at other things.

Is there a reason your class rank is so low that you could write about in your essays? Was there a struggle that happened in your life to affect it, something you over came and how you turned it around? With your rank, there is no guarantee but you SAT is quite good.

Here’s the thing. Getting into the university is going to be your first obstacle. The university likes class rank. They also like high SAT scores. Engineering isn’t going to concentrate so much on your rank but what maths and physics you have had and your readiness and preparedness for the curriculum. What maths and physics have you had? What are your SAT sub scores?

Because you are a review applicant to the university, engineering will likely read your essays as well. Make them good. This is your chance besides your numbers.

Besides full admissions to College Station engineering, you could be offered one of the Engineering Academies. There are several now. https://engineering.tamu.edu/academies

January 20 was when admissions decisions for engineering came out last year for review admits.

“Staying in Texas” does not qualify you per se for in state tuition. You may have all of this covered but in case you do not, here is the info so you can get started. If it can’t be done prior to freshman year, you can get your status changed when it is complete and get the in state tuition. ]

If you are neither a US Citizen nor have issued a Permanent Resident card issued from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you are considered as an International Student and must also submit a copy of the Affidavit of Intent to Become a Permanent Resident stating that you will apply for permanent residency when you are eligible to do so.This option for establishing residency in Texas is available to:
Citizens or permanent residents of the US (Non-citizens and non-permanent residents may also use this option if they have an application for permanent residency on file with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service for at least 1 year without being denied.)
International students who hold an eligible visa or immigration status to domicile in the U.S.

@Crowno Another school you should apply to is UT Dallas. UT Austin will be a likely no for you. Also, when you see the average SAT/ACT score for a college, remember that is averaged among all majors. For engineering majors is where you want to know what the average is. It’s likely not in the 1300’s.

Anyway, UT Dallas has a great computer science major. There are some knowledgeable people on this forum with UTD so you might try posting there.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-generic/
Read the other posts on UT Dallas as well. They might answer your questions too. Good Luck!

@Thelma2 Thanks for the help, about the in-state thing, we’ve talked to counselors at UT Austin and assumed that’d be the case for A&M too. There is a reason I’ve a low class rank and I’ve mentioned that too. I’ve taken all maths (even Stats AP), am in BC Calculus right now, I’ve taken AP Physics 1(passed exam with a 4) and Physics C AP right now, so I hope I’m good there. I’ll also be giving the SAT again in October so hopefully that’ll help too. I’ll be competing in a vex robotics competition and a coding contest this October too. THANKS so much for your help ! Plz tell me if I can do something else too!

@Crowno It sounds like you are doing everything possible at the moment. Have you applied yet? If you have not, you can send in the application now and the essays when you are ready. Your app won’t be considered complete until you do, but it is one part you can get done ahead of time. Then, you can “copy” all of the info from the first app to another TX school so you don’t have to go through the whole process again. Read the part about the formatting and word count as well. When you copy and paste them, read them again to make sure nothing was lost.

You can update your application file any time with new information, including scores. Do the optional essay. As a review applicant, you need this. Don’t go too long into why and what made your GPA so low. Mention it concisely and then go into what you have done to overcome the setback. That is most important. It’s not what happened that counts, it’s what you did about it. Re-read to be concise. You have a word limit.

While on the stats part, both A&M and UT are a reach, that is not to say you could not be admitted or be offered a pathway admission. Do apply to some safeties. UT Dallas and UT Arlington are both great schools and offer a lot. UT Arlington engineering has big relationship with Lockheed Martin and they hire a lot from there. It is also very affordable and the cost of living is as well. Google it. And good luck. Please keep me updated how it goes.

For A&M, you should know decision in Dec (unless they have another snag like last year) and UT will be mid-late Feb. UT Arlington and UT Dallas, you should get a decision pretty shortly.

I see, thanks a lot, I’ll keep u updated :D. @Thelma2

As far TAMU i have first hand experience (almost) daughter’s best friends both applied to the engineering program neither had the stats that CC saya you would need.

Went to stem highschools where you graduate with a AA degree. Top 30% and 33% SAT was 1290 and 1300.

Both were accepted to the engineering program. Both did not go due to cost.

I see @hannuhylu that gets my hopes up a little  sorry they couldn’t go, where did they end up going :\ ?
