I initially put down medical laboratory science for my major but I want to change it to Bio. is this a good decision if I want to go on to grad school to become a Pediatrician? and is this major a difficult one to get into? please help! I wanted some input before I officially submitted a major change.

p.s- I am an auto admit into UT but they have not notified me of acceptance into the major I initially put down

You won’t go to grad school, you will go to Medical School and the Med schools don’t care if you major in biology or ceramics. What they care about is that you have met your med school requirements and that you did that with a high GPA, and a high MCAT. One the of smartest things you can major in is business, so you actually understand what it takes to run a practice (marketing, taxes, accounting) especially if you want to go into primary care.

To address the business major you talked about I was actually thinking of getting my Business Certificate at UT in addition to my Bio major. This is something I was not aware they offered until I went on a tour with them. Apparently it is above having a minor in business but not quite the level of a major. And you also get to have McCombs on your resume so it looks great. Is this a good idea?

I don’t know where you got that the Business Foundations Program(BFP) is above having a minor in business, because it is not.

BFP is open to ALL UT students at UT, whereas getting a minor in business requires a special program such as Economics/Business option where actual McComb’s Business degree classes are taken, not just BFP classes that are tailored to the BFP.

The BFP is a good program nonetheless, and will give a good foundation in business, but is not a direct substitute for the regular business classes that could be taken instead. I imagine it would look good on a resume, but if you are looking at Med School, you need to focus on that GPA and entrance exams WAY more than you’ll need to worry about your resume.

To answer your original question, Biology should not be hard to get into. Most programs in CNS do not require much to transfer into.

The college of natural sciences is an open college so if you applied to anything in the CNS (this includes bio) then you will get into the CNS as long as you got into UT. I was in engineering but eventually transfered to CNS and it took 45 seconds of paperwork and the guy told me they accept everyone who is in UT. Therefore anyone at UT can go into Bio as long as they got into UT. There might be a 2.0 gpa requirement but I’m not sure.

It is easy to change to a Biology major and BFP is not on the level of a business minor. It is a handful of watered down business classes that are required to obtained the certificate. It’s worth it if you are genuinely interested in having some basic business knowledge and is definitely not noteworthy if you think it will make you stand out for medical school admissions.

Thanks for that information, I am interested in taking business classes if they will help me in a career in primary care. Will having a minor or major in business in addition to a biology degree help me stand out to med schools at all, or should I really just concentrate on a good GPA in one degree/getting good entrance exam scores?
