Is it hard to get into CAS Music program?

Did anyone study in the Music undergraduate program in CAS? If yes, can you please share your own experience on the admission process, Standardised test score, Extra-curricular activity, academics, essay, thoughts on this program etc. And is it difficult to get into this undergraduate program? How many students are admitted?

Since it is the study of music (musicology)and not performance -based, there isn’t a talent component and audition to worry about. You do not apply directly into the program, but will be accepted as CAS undecided student. You can declare your major by junior year. It is a 40 credit BA degree. The BM degree is offered through Steinhardt and has more requirements but is geared for performers and composers.

Thank you for replying. However, I am quite confused about applying the BA degree of music in CAS, what do you mean do not directly apply and undecided students? So is it hard to be admitted, like what is the average score. It will help a lot if you provide more detail. Thanks a lot!

@ywcbrian You are applying to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at NYU. You apply using the common app to NYU and then specify Arts and Sciences. Your qualifications for getting into the CAS music major at NYU are the same as someone applying to any other major offered by Arts and Sciences. Music at CAS is not have a talent audition. So average gpa is 3.6 plus. Average SATs are 1920 to 2160 per NYU’s website. If you were applying for the BM music degree through Steinhardt, it’s a diffferent process and your audition would count for half of your admission criteria.

Thx a lot!!! So will my past music performance experience help the application for this major, like local, international award?

Extracurriculars will help, especially when they are related to your intended major. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for all of the information!!!
