is it heard of colleges calling schools during admissiosn to check up?

I heard that if a college/university is debating on whether or not to admit a person, they will call the school and teachers to check up on him. Is this heard of?

They might follow up on a recommendation, or to verify. I don't think this happens too often because of the time crunch.

I know of instances this year where it has happened, yes.

at the publics they have instituted audit programs to check and make sure students have really done the ECs they claim. At privates, especially the more competitive ones, it is quite common for the adcoms to talk each year to the counselors in the HS's in their region. These top colleges want to keep a relationship going with the HS so that the counselor will think of them when future strong students are applying to college. And when the adcom calls they will have a sheet in front of them with the names of the students from that HS, often they will have taken the time to skim thru the app. So they will chat and go over the students, getting (in a casual way) confirmation that the student really did what is claimed.

Bottom line, if you have a gross exaggeration on your app there is a at least some chance it will be discovered.

Sometimes they call for clarification or additional information. I have heard of Penn doing this for ED and I am sure other schools do it too in certain circumstances, though probably not very often because of time constraints.

i havent heard anything about RD, but for ED/EA, yes

Brown called my physics teacher to verify that he wrote my recommendation.
