@nsws, thanks. im glad my original thread received a lot of comments. perhaps it will be a lesson for future applicants.

@CalGal36: I’m not so sure why different UCB transfer Admission counselors said different things, but when I talked to her last month, she mentioned that the Admission recruiters do not like to see the three required courses in IP when they review it and she wanted me to update my grade on myBerkeleyApplication. She did not say it will increase my chances but definitely better than leave it as IP. It is really too late to do anything about it now, I hope what she said is not sure, and best luck to all of us. =)

SFKid did you ever talk to an evaluator today regarding why you got rejected?

@chelz

yes. i was told my app was rejected because i didn’t have my english and math done by fall. even though I had a strong GPA, i was taking a lot of units to meet the 60 deadline. but the biggest reason was not finishing the english and math by fall. had those been completed i probably would have gotten in.

im going to call admissions again and follow up on some unanswered questions. it is now certified my CC counselors know jack squat about UC.

I talked to one of the admissions counselors today and she told me they were looked down upon but doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an auto-reject. I think your application fell into the hands of one nasty evaluator. sorry about what happened though.

@SFKid: Did they mention anything about if you finish your math and English course in spring with good grade, you still have a chance to get admitted through appeal? You have a really good GPA.

@moon

yes but my classes don’t end until the week of may 20th. appeal ends on june 15, but was told they want appeals by middle of may at the latest. so far I have an A in my math and english.

@chelz

i was told the evaluation is done by committee if an app is about to be rejected if someone hasn’t met the minimum requirements (which i did). then again the whole process isn’t exactly public information. i can believe the reasons why i was not admitted, i just don’t think the reasons are particularly fair.

@SFKid: I feel really bad for you. =( It is really not fair since you have a good GPA. Since your final grade won’t be up till June, my suggestion is go to your counselor and request for the grade progress forms and ask your math and English teachers to fill them out, and sent along with the appeal form. Best Luck to you!

i have to find out if my school has a grade progress form. what i may consider is having my teachers certify that i am expected to pass the class. but it’s too early for that, would probably have to wait till may. ill contact UCSB and see what they recommend.

it sucks because i have to do better grades-wise for an appeal whereas if i was accepted i could stop just get by with mediocre performance. there appeal process site is down for me.

true, if it was not for the economic crisis, and budget cuts, we should not have to deal with all these. =(

response to: nsws1631 post number 31.
You are so right. Beware of CC college counselors. Do your own research, use assist.org to look up the exact prerequisites that you need for the department and UC you want to attend. Get a copy of the UC IGETC and follow that, not the State School IGETC. And communicate directly with the department coordinators in the UC departments you are trying to get into—every single department I contacted responded with great enthusiasm and open arms helping me to get admitted (and I did).

Yes, you can get into a UC from a CC because the CC system is designed and funded by tax payers in order to send California kids to the UC system. Now that I am in the UC system, my expenses have dropped by 2k per year as well because I qualify for so much more grant money at a UC. And so, guess what?! It is also cheaper for many of us to attend a UC instead of a CC. Just one more detail that those counselors will not tell you. Oh, and did I mention, the UC schools are great and respected worldwide. Knock 'em dead! Education is a lot of fun when you put your mind to it. Have fun.
