Is it just me or does Greek life seem racist?

There are mostly white guys in fraternities but I guess you'll find some minorities. But if you're tall, athletic and white that seem to be the in for bids. The frats I've talked to do seem cool though, but sororities seem very exclusive and all about having blondes. Does this kind of bother anyone?

Apparently it doesn’t bother anyone because no on replied. Or maybe it’s because this is an inane post that was obviously designed to ■■■■■ this message board, and get an argument going. Everyone realized that, and didn’t dignify it with a reply.

So I’m putting that fine point on it, and then someone should delete this thread altogether.

mango,

I suggest you go to the Panhellenic site and look at photos of women in the ten chapters. I think you will find women of all ethnic groups represented at SC.

I will readily admit that there were no Asians/Hispanics/Indians and only one Black student in my boyfriend’s fraternity; I can’t say if this was a conscious decision or not because I was just a bystander, but it did always strike me as strange. Maybe URM students are not inclined to rush? Maybe URMs tend to join the cultural Greek houses? Or maybe there’s a reason I can’t think of that doesn’t have to do with racism?

They’re not racist as in “omg we hate minorities.” But they’re looking for the dumb, beer binge drinking, weight lifting, having sex with girls on roof type of “Bros.” It just so happens a lot of white guys fit that characteristic. Also, the majority ethnic group at USC is white, so there just so happens to be a lot of “Bros.” I mean, how many Indian guys do you see that act like The Situation from Jersey Shore? Hardly any. How many white guys act like that? A dime a dozen.

There are also Asian frats and Latino frats, but they’re usually not Hellenic and don’t necessarily fit the “HEY BRO, WUT UP BRO” stereotype.

As for sororities. Meh. I’ve seen sororities that are diverse, but white girls tend to be the majority. I mean, not because they’re racist, it just so happens there are more white people on campus and because a lot of them are into that kinda stuff. You know, like their mom and grandmas were in Kappa Kappa Kappa, and they want to keep that tradition alive. Meanwhile, some like Asians or Hispanics or even Blacks are 1st generation college students or simply don’t have that sorority heritage. Or some came to the university with the intent of getting a degree and job instead of getting drunk and having sex on the roof of school buildings.

According to the official records of ethnicity USC’s undergraduate student body is 67% other races other than white. The graduate schools are even more diverse.

The female involved in the unfortunate incident was a UCLA student.

Notaznguy is from UCLA.

it seems to me that frats are mainly a part of white culture. Not that frat’s are cut-off from other cultures, but historically it’s been a white thing. However, this might purely be based on the fact that for much of higher education’s history, universities tended to be filled with white men, as opposed to women and non-white minorities. And so if it is a tradition, as notaznguy suspects and i agree, then i am not surprised at all that it’s mainly a white thing.

Correction:

…just caught my typing error. The percentage above is 57% other races.

diverse student body =/= diverse greek system

Oh, GG – I love when you come in with zingers like this.

And notaznguy – you are sorely mistaken! Being Indian/Asian/Hispanic/Black/White/Purple does not make you more or less inclined to party. People all over the world drink and have late nights; that’s not restricted to “white culture.”

Hell, do you want to know which students were always the most drunk/partied the hardest when I picked them up at 3am when I worked Campus Cruiser? The Indian grad students! (And I’m talking students who usually come to USC for grad school straight from India, not American-born Indian students.) And you know what? Good for them! (They seemed to party most around Diwali, which was always fun.)

I’ll agree that Frats/Sororities are a very “American” tradition, but that doesn’t mean students who are not Caucasian are perfect little sober angels.

I didn’t say they were perfect sober angels. Why do you think they have sex on the roof of buildings? I suppose that fits the angel part, you know, having sex in the sky? And I’m not ■■■■■■■■ either…people at USC literally have sex on the roof of buildings. Even the Daily Trojan wrote a piece on it.

notazguy,

As I remarked above it was an unfortunate incident which involved 1 SC student and 1 UCLA student. Guy, there have been many news articles regarding troubles that occur on the UCLA campus, but we do not spend time posting comments about these on your forum.

Is it just me…Yes, it is…just little old you.

Just my opinion as an incoming freshman - yes, some frats do discriminate against certain ethnicities since frats traditionally consist of white and athletic students. However, I encourage you to rush if you’re interested in Greek life, because no matter what ethnicity you are, there’s a frat out there that’s right for you. I had some frats reject me outright on the 2nd day of rush, but I eventually found a group of guys who I fit in with.

Also not all minorites want to join the frats and sororities that are popular with the white students for reason that are listed (feeling left out, not fitting in). I can defintely speak for black students and say that most black students interested in going Greek will join a Black frat or sorority.

Not sounding racist myself, but most ethnicities aren’t expected to be in frats/sorors. African americans, Jews (and others) will probably join their own frats in favor.

Asians and Indians for the most part are overachiever studiers.

Hispanics tend to join multicultural frats, along with Southeast Asians and Oceanians.

I guess you could say that the white beer-guzzling american male has has greek life in the family, while for others, especially those from immigrant parents, it isnt very vital.

and here we go with the model minority myth…

the sex on the roof thing is funny. A) because it happened once…now apparently “USC greeks have sex on the roofs of buildings.” lol. And B) who gives a flying shxt? If it would have been a non greek, business major…then do “business majors have sex on the roof?” C) I really don’t care if some mutually consenting undergrads have sex on the roof. Do you think honestly its never happened before? Is it. Who shot the freegin photo anyway? some porn hungry “independent” trying to become Woodward, or Bernstein? LOLz
