Is it necessary to take 4 years of foreign language classes in high school?

I experienced some schedule conflicts during the first 2 years of high school, and thus did not take any foreign language class. However, I do take a SAT language test and scored 800. I wonder does it matter if I only take 2 years of foreign language (other than the one I already know) at school, or is it necessary at all for me to take another language class? (I’m aiming to get into some very selective colleges)

The general consensus tends to be that if your guidance counselor can write a short explanation saying that you were unable to take the language for that period of time, it will help mitigate the problem. That is also assuming you have otherwise taken a rigorous courseload. If it’s at all possible, you could look into taking it at a local community college over the summer as that could help. If not, you did all you could and you will just have to see what happens.

Your 800 will show you have enough foreign language.

You’re an international student. English is not your native language. In other words, English is your foreign language. With that and your 800, I cannot off the top of my head think of a college where you would not be covered.

You should check each college to which you intend to apply for applicable rules but usually if you are an international from a country where English is not the native language, the “foreign” language they want to see that you have taken is English.

I’m an incoming junior, so do you think I should use the space for foreign language to take other academically challenging classes instead?
