@jacketup Did your son attend a private or public school? What was his rank?
Does it make a difference if he attended public school verses private school?
@inpatientmomnc I asked the question because SC has a uniform grading scale for public schools which was weighted to a 5.875 last year and now it is weighted to a 6.0. If he attended a public school and had taken 12 AP classes and done well in those classes, one would expect a higher WGPA. For example, a 90 in an AP class is weighted as a 5.0
@jacketup Just to clear up a couple of items… the average admission stats for the ACT and both “new” and “old” SAT – are, in fact, higher for OOS than in state students. One might consider these the best “neutral” measure of quality of student as they are consistent across states.
The Clemson admissions rate is HIGHER for SC students… 54% of applicants admitted than for OOS students, 49%.
Please also note that the State of SC only pays 10% of Clemson’s budget… The MUCH higher tuition that OOS families pay provides programs that benefit the the 2/3 of in state students who are paying far less for their education.
In fact, a CBSnews report (link provided below) recently listed Clemson as the 10th most expensive out of state school.
Therefore, I am not sure what in state people should be “up in arms” about. In fact,OOS students are contributing to increasing Clemson’s stats, national reputation, and finances.

All of the admission statistics noted above are from a Clemson developed presentation… If you are interested, you might look here. http://www.clemson.edu/admissions/undergraduate/documents/breakfast-presentation.pdf
It sounds as though your son has some wonderful opportunities and will have a great experience ahead of him. Best wishes for your family positively moving into the exciting times to come.
Just wondering. I had a parent tell me that colleges do not take private schools grading as serious as public school…
My D goes to a very competitive private school & I do believe that Clemson does not take private school grading as serious as public school. I believe they have a way of knowing the rigor of a school - almost like a ranking.
The CG completes a form that states types of classes provide # of AP, IB, Honors etc available at the school to determine rigor @SFLmom . Private schools may not have the number of APs , IB classes that public schools offer.
