Is it OK to be persistent if you really want an internship?

I got interviewed by a company for a summer internship. I received a follow up email saying they were looking more into me based on my interview and achievements. Then I heard nothing for 3 weeks, after which I contacted the manager who interviewed me. The manager emailed me back after a week and said that my email was forwarded the corresponding HR Branch that handles internships. I was told that they would contact me regarding potential second interview or state of internships for the company. I haven't heard from them since and it has been over a month since the manager replied to me.

So then an acquaintance of mine said he got an email saying that this company had a position open for summer internship. He didn't even interview and got the email cause his father is friends with someone in the company.

I feel like crap that the company hasn't even notified me on anything, even that I didn't get a position.

Do you think it is alright to email the manager one last time saying I still haven't been contacted by HR even regarding the state of internships? Or do you think it's all in vain?

This is a BIG company. I would rather not name it though.

It is absolutely all right to send another follow up e-mail! What do you have to lose?

Persistence will show how interested you are in the internship. You may also include in the e-mail that if you were offered the position you would accept it. Some students looking for internships take some time to decide wether to accept the position offered to them.
You may be a better candidate knowing you would say yes immediately!
Good luck!
