follow up interview

This is my current situation:

I interviewed for an internship exactly 4 weeks ago. they said they’d get back in 1-2 weeks. I sent a thank you email the day after. 2.5 weeks later I emailed and asked for an update. Manager said he was out sick for a few days and would try to finalize internship positions by the end of the next day. It’s been a week and a day past the day he said he’d finalize it by. Is it reasonable for me to send another request for update? or would it be annoying? I only have a 2.5 weeks left of school so i’d like to know asap where i stand, regardless of the decision.

I’d probably call within the next few days. Call, not email, so they can’t avoid you.

In his last email he also said he’d get back to me.

Email or call and say you are still very interested in the position and ask if he needs you to send any additional information, rec letters, etc. to help him in his decision. It shows your interest. It’s possible he has already made offers to some and is waiting for them to accept or decline before he knows whether there is a position for you. You were not rejected outright, so that’s a good sign.

Often it’s the “annoying” people who get the job. If stuck between two applicants, the employer is more likely to give the job to the one who continues to show interest and follow up!

Ok, thanks for the suggestions.
I will email him this monday maybe saying something along the lines of reminding him that he mentioned he’d get back to me soon, and to let me know if has any questions regarding my qualifications.

There is no reason to mention that he said he’d get back to you soon. He knows that. I recommend you just send a nice email saying how much you like the company and are very interested in the job, asking if he has any questions regarding your qualifications like you said, and finishing up by saying you are looking forward to hearing from him. Also, this email is a good opportunity for you to say anything you want him to hear, whether you are restating something that came up in the interview, adding something you wish you had said in the interview, clarifying something that came out wrong in the interview, etc.

Sent them an monday morning, still no response. I guess this is probably a no-go.
It is a bit frustrating when they decide to not respond to emails that require a yes or no answer.
It’s like they don’t have the moral courage to answer.

Should I send them an email asking if I should stop inquiring about the position? I would like to get definitive closure on this, and I think such email would probably get a response.

I also have another summer opportunity that I need to confirm whether or not I can commit to, should I mention that as well?

At this point I would let it go and accept the other opportunity. Personally, I have never offered a position to someone I found “annoying” as another poster suggested because I certainly wouldn’t want to work with that person. I think one follow-up is okay, but asking if you should stop inquiring isn’t necessary since they haven’t responded to your other e-mail. There might be a hold-up on filling the position, or they might be waiting to see if another candidate is secured before letting go of other potential offers. Either way, they’re not making much of an effort to engage you and obtain your talent, so I would take it elsewhere.

If you absolutely need closure, then one last e-mail stating that you’ve been offered another position and would like to know if you are still in consideration might be appropriate, along with a date of when you need to make your decision. But make sure it is short, to the point, and professional. Some hiring managers are just swamped and may have forgotten to respond, and some just don’t care to respond - but again, if you were someone they really wanted, they would reach out to you.
