So for one of my essays, I talk about doodles that I draw and how they relate to my life. Its nothing serious, but people have told me that my drawings are good and taht I should send one. It would not be a supplement- rather, it would be just an addition to my essay. I do not compete with my drawings, nor have I taken an art class since elementary school. It is purely a hobby. What should I do?

You should send a portfolio. Im not sure if thats possible because i really dont know anything about art, but you should see if thats possible, cause that would be an amazing way to let the schools see your artistic passion and ability

Well the thing is, I don’t really have a legitimate portfolio lol. Neither do I really have too much “passion” for art- I am a musician. I just doodle when I can.

Well, I don’t think you should send doodles in with your essay. I agree with qwert, why not send a portfolio? Although you should only send one if you’re serious about it and you’re actually GOOD at drawing (otherwise you’ll be wasting the art department’s time). I’m not saying your stuff isn’t good but usually friends/classmates aren’t exactly the best critics. I’ve seen people fawn over drawings I would say at best, may be good enough to line the litter box with or something of that nature. I’m currently taking AP Art and plan on sending a supplementary portfolio. If you have any questions about that, you can ask. If you don’t care/don’t want to put in the effort, I’m sure the adcoms can understand even without a picture. :)

Think creatively. I know someone who submited a comic strip as a college essay and they are now at RISD. They also got into NYU.

Can I send you a picture, anagenesis?

Sure. I’ll be happy to help you out.

Ju_liaa: RISD is a really good art school. NYU has an artsy flair too. Now if OP was applying to an art oriented school, I would say an essay with like doodles around the margins or something would be appropriate. I’m assuming OP isn’t applying to somewhere like RISD or Academy of Art. If you’re applying to somewhere like Stanford with a prevalent academic focus, ehhh, not so much.
