Is it okay to playfully yet intellectually joke around on certain parts of my essays?

I want to convey the humorous personality that I have, or does it seem like I am trying too hard?

If that really is who you are, go for it. Though of course make sure the jokes you’re using aren’t cliche or cheesy…

I was not planning on joking outright, but I just want to add some playful humor to contrast some serious sections. Is that good or bad?

anything you WANT to write is good. it’s your essay, your story, it’s “you”. if you want to add humor, then do it. i’m sure giving the readers something to smile about is a good thing :-)
