Is it possible to get more aid at Fullerton at this point?

Look I know it looks like a lot of text, but it is not really :)

Hello, I am currently going to be a Freshman(full time for Comp.Eng.) at Fullerton this fall and will be attending housing there.
Here is the breakdown of all of this.my EFC = 0 and my family income is 18,000. With a sister going to UCLA and dorming there as well.

Grants:
Estimated Federal Pell Grant-5,730.00
Estimated State Grant-5,472.00
State University Grant?(If I can call them will there be a possibility to be able to attract this grant?)
Loans:
Estimated Fed Direct Loan-3,500.00

Estimated Fed Direct Loan Unsub-2,000.00

16,702.00 is total(Loans+Grants)

The total cost of attending there is around 24,440.00(19,824 Tuition and dorm min.). Leaving a 7.7k Gap of money from my family. I am sure I can cut corners. Maybe 2754 because Transportation and Misc/Personal. I barely use 100$ on myself a year. I did sign up for work study but when I check my Financial Aid it is not there so maybe next time or I can beg on my knees hopefully!!!

This is the minimum going there? Maybe? I think I am trying, this is all new to me.
$19824(Tuition and Dorm)

+$1000-600(books)

$20824-20424

-$16702(loans+grants)

$4122-3722

Look I am just trying to get most of the debt low because I know I am going to be taking out the loans right there for the school. Also trying to get more grants. I don't need my parents going through any stress they are around 60-64, and I don't want them to be having a hard time. (If it is a must I will drop out of the year and go to a CC. Hopefully this is at the bottom of the list.)

(I wish there was an Air-force ROTC at Fullerton, but only Army. I would of joined to help out for money cost)

(If I did my math wrong please correct me. I am just worrying a lot!)

I know I could be in even a worst situation, but I am just trying my best to keep everything on a low.

First, get a job during the summer. I think you will probably get a state grant but I’ll defer to someone with more knowledge of CA financial aid.

For what it is worth, ROTC would not have paid you anything for simply joining. Only if you are on a ROTC scholarship. Cadets without scholarships do get some money in the junior year ($350 per month) and senior year ($400 per month). Otherwise, nothing.

For some reason this is a common misunderstanding. :-?

@"Erin’s Dad"‌ Yeah I tried that. Nothing really comes back to me from my applications. I tried to get dishwasher, fast food, and some computer job at a LAN center. I’ll keep on trying though, but I do have a class during the summer so It is kinda of constraining.Still I’ll try on.

@NROTCgrad‌ My bad, I just remember seeing the email I got about the program before the actual acceptance letter. that’s how I knew I was accepted to the school :P.

NROTCgrad, when we were at orientation last week my daughter was being recruited and they said there was money available for her now. She’s not interested, but I got the impression she would get several thousand dollars for this year.

that doesn’t sound right …the tuition is about $6000. try to find some economical housing and food for about 10k

was there a CSU you could commute to?

how far do your parents live from Fullerton

if one of your parents has bad credit, have them apply for a PLUS loan so that they will be tonight and you’ll get $4000 more in loans. By the way, nearly every mcDonalds is hiring

@mom2collegekids‌ Dorms around 14000 and Tuition around 6000. 19824 is just the minimum with just those 2. I don’t know about books that can vary and depends how savvy I can go and get them cheap. I live around 30 miles away from Fullerton. The csu closest to me would be CSULA 12 miles.

So jealous of my sister only needs to pay 4000 only grants no loans T^T

I’m confused. Is this student Calgrant eligible? If so, is that the $5000 or so grant? Why did I think the Calgrant was more than that?

@thumper1‌ Well I think thats cal grant I am not too sure about it.

the Cal grant should be in the amount of tuition…or very close to that.

that is high for dorms…see what you can find right off campus

Then there is something clearly amiss with this student’s award…if he completed the Calgrant application on time.

So…OP…did you complete the Calgrant application on time?

@thumper1‌ Well I did the fafsa on time. Then my college counselor at my high school said she sent the GPA verification out.

The double apts are much cheaper

Mom2…could you please explain what the Calgrant might look like for this student?

@mom2collegekids‌ yeah I asked about it, but housing said First time freshmen can only do residence halls. UNLESS! they fill up and then maybe able to stay in the double apartment. Yeah they was probably the first one I saw.

What is your University Grant? You have a ? in your post. You should know this by now.

The $5472 is her Cal Grant amount.

Should there be a university grant as well?

@3younguns‌ I didn’t get a university grant only Pell/Calgrant. My sister was also concerned on how I wasn’t getting more money.

@thumper1 My sister said there should be. I hope there is.
