Is it possible to improve CR 300 points?

Well, is it physically possible? I want to get my CR score (first CR score was a 51PSAT, but recently got a 590 on the January with no studying) to the 750+ range. You can say that I lack natural talent in this area. The frustrating thing is, is that there's nothing to do but practice. No rules to memorize or any content to review..

Is it possible to get that high with just practice?

You can memorize vocab. 3 a day for a year and you have over 1000.

Tell us what you have the most problems with. Understanding the passages? Choosing the best answer choice for the passages? The sentence completions? What?

It would be almost impossible to raise CR 300 points from 590.

Huh…It depends on your personal situation. Over two years, I raised my CR score by 250 points, but I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. Asides from that, it looks like you only need to raise your score by 180 points or so, not 300, which is definitely more feasible.

I know this may sound like typical advice, but if you put a lot of effort into improving your critical reading skills in general and not just centering your studying around what the SATs are looking for, you may be able to pull it off. It worked for me. :)

Nah, you can’t really improve a 590 by 300 points because that would put you above 800!

Just kidding. :)

Like others suggested, I would start memorizing some vocab words now. Get the blue book and do as many practice passages as possible. You need to develop the skills to read quickly, thoroughly, and accurately. Also look up Noitaraperp’s article on the Critical Reading section - it’s tacked at the top of the SAT Preparation forum’s index.

Ok, sorry to hijack this thread, but CR was my worst section.

According to the score report, I missed a lot of passage based reading questions. I got all of the easy questions right, and only missed two of the hard questions, but I got a whoping 4/13 correct on the medium questions.

What can I do to improve? I’m getting Grammatix tomorrow and I’m going to get Rocket Review from the library very soon.

What else should I do? I have the BB and I know the best thing to do is practice practice, practice! I’d like to get my CR up to a 680+ at least, up from a 600 on the Jan SAT.

Thanks

Buy Direct Hits early and make them your bible. Follow these strategies:

I got 510 in my first sitting (because I was not prepared for the harsh timing X_x)

I have both direct hits and I’ve read noitra prep’s guide a bajillion times. Vocab isn’t my main concern (because I can actually study for it) but the CR questions are.

Yes it is man. 1) memorize vocab everyday (preferably in the summer when you have time). Want to know the best way? make flashcards… yes they take time, but trust me it works. 2) LEARN TO READ FASTER! Especially by using your pencil to trace over the lines of text… 3) Review and find out exactly why you get questions wrong.

It’s not going to be easy, but not as impossible as you might think. “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” - William Ward… Good Luck!!! I’m no expert, but these were the strategies that helped me. Feel free to ask anything else.

Keep using those two CR strategies I sent. USE THEM! And use them again!

You have to keep at it. Practice makes perfect for this silly test.
