I'm going into my senior year and right now I have summer break. I've never taken the SAT before, but my projected PSAT score is 148 (terrible I know), without studying. I Really want an SAT score higher than a 2000 but it seems so impossible. I'm determined to study over the summer, and I started today but after an hour I felt so discouraged and stumped because the material looks so hard. (I have the Barron's book). I'm planning on finishing few SAT books, but I feel like I don't know the material. I mean, how are you supposed to do well on the test if you don't know the material.

So, has anyone had a terrible score and raised it drastically? Please help. I'm pretty depressed about this, because I feel like I can't do it.

What exactly is it that’s stumping you? What math classes have you taken in school? The writing section is easy to improve because you just have to memorize some rules. Critical reading requires knowledge of vocab which you can learn ( I suggest using an app to practice). Also did you take your PSAT in tenth grade? You may want to take a full practice test from the college board website now to see if junior year has improved your score.

I had a 157 PSAT (cold sitting), and recently received a 1980 on my June SAT w/o much prep. I know that’s not the 2k you were looking for, but it’s pretty close. I just hope this shows you that you can definitely raise your “average” SAT score to a 2000+ if you’re willing to follow through and WORK on your SAT score. That doesn’t mean for you to mindlessly go through books with the intent of finishing them as fast as you can for the sake of finishing them. I would focus on one book at a time, & focus on your weak points (don’t waste time reviewing Level 1/2/3 questions if you’re already strong in that area). I have also found that PSAT scores aren’t very indicative of what a student is capable of scoring on the actual thing. Don’t sweat it.
