I’ve been attending university in Alabama (my home state) so far, but I hate every aspect about my life here. I decided to go small school, for fear of not being able to reach out to professors and receive the help I need with my disabilities. But it feels just like high school, my parents are too close and still breathing down my neck, and the place is smaller than my home town. I considered transferring out of here the first day I got here, and my feelings haven’t changed after months of being here.
I’ve talked it over with my close friends (who lived in Texas and then went to UT) and they’re encouraging me to apply there. But looking at the sites, I’m almost scared to. Would it even be possible for me to transfer now? It’s still my first year at university. How can I be sure my credits even transfer? Is it better to wait to transfer, take a different path, not go to UT at all? Any advice would be helpful!
UT has a system that lets you know what your classes at your current university will count for at UT. I don’t think you can post links here, but if you google UT automated transfer equivalency system it will be the first link. It takes a little bit of navigating to figure out how it works but it definitely helped.
As for transferring as a freshman, it technically is possible. For example, I am currently a first-time freshman and I submitted my application as a transfer for Spring 2018 in September. I gained the 30 hours needed to apply as a transfer through dual enrollment courses, AP exam credits, and a couple classes in the summer. I completed 33 hours before my first semester of college. It takes a little bit of extra work, but it is definitely possible. Starting fall 2018, you need 24 hours completed or in progress to be able to apply as a transfer. I hope this info helped and that you are doing okay. If you have any more questions about the transfer process feel free to ask and I’ll try my best to help.
Beginning with summer 2018 admission, UT Austin has lowered the required number of transferable semester hours needed to be considered for transfer admission from 30 to 24. So, yes, you can transfer classified as a freshman with 24 to 30 semester hours.
Thank you very much! I tried to look at the transfer equivalents and I think that’s what got me overwhelmed, not knowing if credits would transfer, as I am currently at a pretty small out of state university. But these responses have given me some more confidence.
