Is it really helpful contacting professors of college you wanna join?

I've read somewhere that staying in touch with college professors of the college you wanna join can really boost your application. I was planning to get in touch with some professors but I am not sure how to start the talk or what to talk about and how to go on about the things.
can anyone help on this please ?
I need it detailed

I imagine it could be very helpful if it was genuine. If it is just something being done to improve chances of acceptance then that might be obvious and could backfire. A reason to contact a professor would be to learn more about common academic/research interests or details about a school’s program of studies that aren’t found on its website.

I agree. *Being *in contact with one or more professors in a college or university might help your chances for admission (or might not, depending on the selectivity of the institution), but contriving a way to get in contact with one or more professors will be an empty gesture. It also seems to me rather disrespectful of the professors’ time.
