Is it really ok to use pop culture on the SAT essay?

Hey Everyone,

I have gone around asking teachers and people about this questions and I had mixed respones but I need one legit, solid answer and why. I came across a real anecdote from a friend I know who scored a perfect 12 on a practice test taken at a college prep class down here in Texas, graded by a couple of teachers. The topic was something about responsibility and he started out the essay with "With great power comes great responsibility" but he didn't source it from 'Spider-Man'. So does this mean as long as i don't source something from pop culture, its perfectly normal? I would really appreciate if someone can give me some non-convoluted insight on this matter

Thanks

You can use it, as long as it correctly reflects your thesis, and you give the reader an idea of whatever you are talking about.

Keep in mind, the readers of your essay are mainly, if not allteachers, so proposing evidence from history and literature works tend to work better.

I used Steve Jobs lol, and I got a 12.
