Good "POP CULTURE" examples for SAT ESSAYS. (movies, current events..)

does anyone know any Good "POP CULTURE" examples for SAT ESSAYS???(movies, current events..)

i'll start.
Spider-man: responsibility comes with power, lack of private life, fame..
Mean Girls: harm in competition, identity
Gossip Girl: wealth, harm in competition, wants to fit in society, identity, how past influences present
The Lion King: family, loyalty, jealousy
Aladdin: difference between social status, honesty, freedom

are these good :)more suggestions pls!

Stay away from those. Don't make the essay more complicated than it has to be. "Joey hated shelly so he turned emo and cried" won't speak well for you. You can use them, but it'll be quite a stretch. Just stick to literary examples and historical events. I guess if you're tha desperate, heres one.

Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo directed by Mike Bigelow.

Check it out.

thanks!
well my SAT tutor actually told me that it would be bad to have all literature examples, because it sorta shows this theme only appears in literature.
i really am not good w/ history...so im giving up on that one lol
so yea, applying in pop culture is good in a way that it shows the theme is "broad" and "applicable"...i guess it depends on how you write it.
thanks though :)

Actually, even though examples from literature don't ACTUALLY prove anything about real life, the readers who grade your essays are all Literature teachers from high school and college. So, they feel more "connected" to literary citations. ;)

Of course, you should go with whichever theme you are most comfortable ... just make sure yours and the grader's viewpoints are similar.

PS - I don't advise your acquiring examples from popular movies (Spider-man, Harry Potter, Transformers, etc.). If you are intent on using one, make sure the movie is one that has been praised by CRITICS or is an Oscar/BAFTA nominee or winner (Schindler's List, Munich, Pride and Prejudice, etc.). Again, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Titanic do not count.

PPS - The OP is joking. Don't use examples about whores. :p

I used an example from a film, and it seemed to work fine for me.

unoriginal- Howd you do in that essay?

heres some I like

Dark Knight- something with ending of how he had to be bad guy to be hero
Kung Fu Panda- never give up!
heath ledger- drugs, psychological probs, got too involved with his role with joker and that brought him down
britney spears- couldnt handle all this limelight, went bald
pokemon- never give up? ash isnt quitting till he catches em al, which is impossible cu they keep making more!
yugioh- faith in the heart of the cards

Use examples from Lit and History IF POSSIBLE, but use pop culture or personal IF YOU ARE STUCK. I think you risk a prejudice in using Pop Culture examples.

There are many books that lend themselves to SAT essays; if you go on SparkNotes to refresh yourself with themes of a few books you have read and are quite familiar with, you should be set.

Even if you aren't really a history person, there are certain events you know enough about to include in an essay for one of your paragraphs, e.g. The Great Depression, Nazi Germany, Civil Rights Movement, Abe Lincoln, Founding Fathers, etc.

nbafan135- I did alright; I got a 10. I didn't really know what to expect, as I had never taken the SAT or anything prior to that time. I also used two literary examples, so I didn't use all "pop culture" references, but still.

I have problem coming up with literary examples...lol if I've read even a fraction as many books as movies I've watched just this past year I'd be set

Very nice unoriginal. I'm trying to get up to that but I dont practice essays. Im just tryna get 10ish since I usualy do pretty well on mc

..........

eddies million dollar cookoff from disney channel sounds liek a pretty good example too.

say what you want, I've heard of more 10-12's with pop culture than not

I personally wrote a really good essay about Great Gatsby and The Scarlet Letter...got an 8.

Wrote a bad essay, with fewer vocab words, etc, wrote a really random story about a summer program and something else stupid-got a 10

Heroes- extraordinary talents beyond understanding
One tree Hill- psycho nanny

^ haha yeah I could definitely use Heroes in my essay...is using movie/tv show examples bad? because I thought that the point of the essay wasn't to show off what kind of fancy hard books you've read but rather how you argue your point and ability to write...might be just me though~~~

it'd definitely work in my favor lol, because my books read ratio to movies watched ratio is something like 1:200+

one tree hill?! say what! what a good show. you can write about inspiration, jealousy, so much! good idea highschooler.

yeaa and gossip girl too! in my opinion (:

Keep in mind who the graders are...

^ yeah they're human beings lol gotta know more than just Shakespeare

It's not about what examples you use, but rather how you use them. By listing specific things from each example to fortify your thesis, you provide fairly conclusive information, and will get a high score.
