A close friend of mine, who is studying at MIT, said that due to high amount of pressure at MIT, he has to take drugs (not medicine)... such as weed and some more which I forgot... to help him relax. He also pointed out to me that alot of his friends are also doing it, and some even do the "hard core" drugs. Is it true? or is he just exaggerating?

Um...that's the first time I heard anything of the sort.

Well, while it's true that MIT has its share of coke addicts, I have to say that your friend's assertion isn't true. At the end of the day, we're all MIT students, and we need to be responsible for our brains. We have classes to pass, after all...

There are definitely people at MIT who do drugs, although all of the people I know who did drugs at MIT did them before MIT as well.

As you might imagine, whether or not you see drug use at MIT depends on your peer group. Some groups do 'em, and most do not.

"Drugs found at a University!"- Hold the front page.

I think anyone who claims that there is no drug use on campus is clearly mistaken. But the question of whether illegal drugs exist at MIT is actually a lousy question. A much better question is whether there is more or less drug use on the MIT campus than at other schools.

There is a real dearth of good data (drug use being illegal in most places), so almost everything is conjecture. That being said, MIT students tend to be brighter than most, and illegal drug use tends to be moderately dumb, so I would strongly guess that there is less use at MIT than at most other schools.

That being said, I recall a guy I knew on the MIT campus who dropped acid in his eyes "because it gets absorbed faster that way". There is drug use everywhere. Historically at MIT, some residences did experiment more with recreational pharmaceuticals than others. For example, going back 30 years, there was an open drugs bar at Senior House's Steer Roast.

Today there are illegal drugs on the MIT Campus. The overwhelming majority of MIT students do not take or use drugs. There is no contradiction in those statements.

my mit interviewer openly told me that marijuana use was prevalent and easy to obtain

iwotic my son goes to MIT and has a lot of other ways to relax- swimming, running, skiing, dancing, music and just hanging out with friends. He says that he has had wine and beer in 'moderate amounts' while socializing on occasion but he doesn't use drugs. Nor do most of his friends. But he is aware that some kids do. It would be your choice and you most certainly wouldn't feel left out if you didn't.

I thought my coke addict joke was clever. :(.

Having said that, most of what people have posted is dead-on.

I enjoyed the coke joke a lot, no worries =P.
