Is it true that Harvard and MIT students look down upon Boston College students?

… okay, well then im not quite sure what the point of the original question was.

if its your dream school, go. if its not your dream school because youre afraid harvard kids will look down on you, then don’t go… what else is there to be confused about?

False. A diploma that says “Harvard” will open many doors and impress a lot of people.

I am a normal human being. I am not Bill Gates.

After your first job, employers care about what you’ve accomplished, not where you went to school. People you work with and casual friends won’t know, or won’t remember if you told them. Where you went to college just isn’t a part of most adult interactions, because it really doesn’t matter. What you do with your adult life is what’s important, and that is where you will derive your self-esteem. Unless you want to be like the sad man in this story: “There is an 85 year old man who lives at my mother’s retirement community, which includes retired doctors, past presidential advisors, and authors, several of whom hold PhD’s. My mother tells me everyone laughs about the fact that within five minutes of conversing with this gentleman, he will let you know he attended Harvard. It is apparently his most important accomplishment in life.”

At least the sad gentleman accomplished something in his sad life. In my case, I don’t expect to ‘accomplish’ anything other than surviving the nine to five until I am too old to work. In my future career path, I can’t think of anything significant to accomplish for people like me who aren’t brilliant. That’s why, in my case, going to a big name school is ideal, so that I can at least have a chance to compete with people I normally wouldn’t have a chance to compete with.

Great attitude - that’s the spirit!

PMVD has infiltrated the Boston College section of the board.

Dude… we’re in Chestnut Hill, MIT and Harvard are in Cambridge so unless you frequent Cambridge a lot with your BC hoodie, nobody will look down upon you … and if you’re in Boston there will be kids from every college so it’s going to be a big mix

^^ pmvd ?

…

You’re clearly misguided. BC is in no way considered an inferior institution by anyone with half a brain. It’s a highly reputable university with a breathtakingly gorgeous campus to beat. If you’re going to shy away from applying to colleges you feel doesn’t live up to par with your scanty view of prestige then you seriously need to do some self-reflecting and realize that a successful career doesn’t lie entirely on the bedrock of a mere diploma. It’s what you make of it.

If you don’t think you’re smart enough for the career path you’ve chosen, then find a different career path. If you don’t expect yourself to accomplish anything in your life beyond mere survival, there’s no need to “waste” money on a college education. Learn a trade.

ron:

You could always enroll in Harvard extension, and you will receive a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University – it just won’t be Harvard College.

Ok… I really don’t see the problem here. You think the only thing you can accomplish in life is going to Harvard? Then work your butt off and try to get into Harvard. If you do, then this conversation will be moot. Your don’t think you can accomplish anything in your “chosen career”? Then choose another one. At this point, you are not bound by ANYTHING. Pick something you are good at, or work your butt off to GET good at it.

There are people who are born brilliant. There are people who work to become brilliant. And then there are people who settle, and then go on to brag about their alma mater in nursing homes. Do you really want to fall into the latter?

ron, although I find your question a little strange, at least you are honest about what you want, your limitations and strength. I think the thread is pretty conclusive, at least to BC students anyway, that BC is not looked down on by Harvard or MIT. For a more straight from the horses’ mouth, go to the MIT and Harvard threads and ask the question.

I’m from CA. The kids I know who went to BC are smart. They shouldn’t feel inferior to
anyone. The only thing I would question … is spending all that money on a BC education
really worth it?? Particularly in this economy. I’d rather go to a competitive public school
and bank the $100K I’d save. If you have rich parents…no problem. If not you should
seriously think about the return you’re getting for spending $50K plus a year.

If you’re that worried about it just think of it this way: Harvard and MIT look down on BC, BC looks down on BU, BU looks down on Northeastern and on and on and on. There are so many schools in Boston and BC is at the top of that pecking order.

In all seriousness, Harvard students don’t look down on BC students. I find it funny that people have this perception that all Harvard students are arrogant, conceited, etc, etc.

BC is a fine schools and it’s not like the two campuses are even close to one another. If you’re going to BC I’m not sure how much interaction you will have with Harvard kids. I have spent a great deal of time in Boston and am moving to Cambridge in two weeks. I can count on one hand the number of college aged kids wearing BC gear I have seen around Harvard Square.

“If you’re that worried about it just think of it this way: Harvard and MIT look down on BC, BC looks down on BU, BU looks down on Northeastern and on and on and on. There are so many schools in Boston and BC is at the top of that pecking order.”

Is this how BC students think? I’m not sure if its even worth applying to.

^Yes, SimpleJack, we all feel whatever someone with the name AUTiger (aka Auburn University of Alabama) says we feel. heavy sarcasm

Well the reason why i brought this up is because BC as an institution i find pretty overrated not the best well rounded atleast. The best program it offers is business which is why i am considering it. They have no other “highly ranked programs”. Just wanted to know if students really felt this way about themselves thats all.

Simplejack, if you couldn’t sense my sarcasm then BC might be a school that would be reach for you. I was joking.

Just so you know, I am beginning a second masters degree at Harvard this Fall and personally, I think BC is a fantastic school and I don’t look down on their students. Every student I ever met from BC seemed extremely intelligent.

Reddune, glad you caught the Auburn reference. I had a good laugh at your post.

Actually BC is a match and GC told me i have a fantastic shot. I’m sorry i didn’t catch on to your sarcasm and of course you wouldn’t look down on their students because you went to Auburn.
