Is it true?

Hi was wondering if Barnard also see’s the courses you took outside of school ( such as a community college course) and adds that grade to your final GPA,thus helping you…or not?
My friend says they do this, however, someone else told me they dont add it to your final GPA…
Do any of you guys know???

Calculation of GPA

The grade-point average printed on Barnard transcripts is your Barnard GPA. (Overall Barnard GPA appears on transcripts printed since August 1997.) It includes only classes that you took during the academic year as a registered Barnard student. It does not include work done at other institutions, such as study leave or summer school coursework. Any grades indicated on the transcript in parentheses are not included in the Barnard GPA.

Course Catalogue:
Transfer students are eligible for general honors
when both overall and Barnard averages meet the required academic standards.

and

First-year students with a record of prior course work taken as non-matriculants at an
accredited college in the United States may request up to 15 points of transfer credit.
Such work will be evaluated after the student has completed 12 points at Barnard. Grades
for this course work are included in the overall average.

I believe the OP was talking about grades obtained prior to admission to Barnard.

From the Barnard admissions site:

[quote]
The Committee on Admissions selects young women of proven academic strength who exhibit the potential for further intellectual growth. In addition to their high school records, recommendations, and standardized test scores, the candidates' special abilities and interests are also given careful consideration. While admission is highly selective, no one criterion determines acceptance.

I don't personally know the answer to this. If nobody answers on this board (and even if they DO, you should double-check), I would look further at the admissions website and/or call them and ask the question. From the above quote, however, I would assume that they will see and consider any outside grades such as those you describe only if you include them and/or they are already on your HS transcript info. Unless you did poorly in those outside classes, I would think it would be a great factor for them to consider, though it may not be added to your "official" GPA. Barnard does a good job, IMO, of considering all factors with regards to admisison, not just the number value of your GPA or your standardized test scores.

Bes to you!

Yes churchmusicmom, my last paragraph explains the prior to admissions part.

Moonbright: Your question is kind of vague because you don't mention your academic status (applying or enrolled and after 1st year) and if you were enrolled when you took the classes outside of Barnard. So I'd add that if your Community College grades suck then don't transfer them. I don't think Barnard searches randomly to see what classes students took in a summer or winter session at another school. Plus if I'm not mistaken they have to okay a class from another institution before you take it if you plan on transferring it.
