Is it utterly gauche to wear your high school letter jacket at college?

I love it when the dancers wear their letter jackets over their flowey pastel lyrical dance costumes.

DD wears her high school ring while in college and when I asked her if she wanted a college ring she said she’d rather have a chair. Good news, the chair is about half what the ring would cost.

When I married my husband (he was 30), he was still wearing his high school ring. I told him he had to stop.

S2, a four year starter on the high sch. football team had zero interest in getting a letter jacket. Letter jackets are not really that popular at his h.s (not a 'status" symbol ) and are expensive. He could see no reason in spending money on something he would never wear after high sch. He wanted a Carhartt jacket instead (which he has worn a lot),lol. He will prob. take that one to college next year.

He did get a team hoody with his last name and jersey number on the back. He has worn it a lot but won’t take it to college. He already has two hoodies from the college he will be attending. They will prob. be his college uniform.

I have read that wearing high sch. stuff at college is a dead giveaway that you’re a freshman.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Step Away From The Letter Jacket.

I wish I still had my letterman jacket! My kids would have liked using it for 50s days etc

The other high school in our district, which is the original old HS (old by Texas standards) still has letter SWEATERS. They look like 50s day every day.

Thinking back to my college days, it occurs to me that the general opinion here could use one qualification: If you are an all-conference athlete with the kind of luminous beauty that graces magazine covers and the kind of body that graces magazine covers for fitness magazines, you can get away with wearing your high school letter jacket (or anything else you damn please).

Hmm. I’m still in HS.. I don’t want a letter jacket for the reason, I don’t think I’d wear it after HS. My step-dad (who went to my school) still has his, and its cool. I’ve worn it a few times, I wouldn’t want to wear mine after HS.

My ring on the other hand, I love. It definitely looks like a class ring, but it’s very tiny (which is good for me, it doesn’t look gaudy). It has the stone of my school color (I didn’t want my birthstone, it’s April - diamond. And I think diamond and a silver band looks too wedding-ish), my name and my grad year in a starburst, and then our Mascot. Then of course the HS name around the stone… I don’t think that it is too overly screaming !!!HIGHSCHOOL!!!. So I probably will continue to wear it. I also have tons of my school shirts, for basketball and powderpuff, and everything else. I won’t stop wearing them.. If nothing else they’re awesome workout/sleep shirts. I won’t wear them “out” or to class, but I don’t think I’ll burn all my Spirit Clothes the day I graduate.. Altho that could be fun ha

oo cross posted with JHS.. if that’s the case. Then I guess a guy I go to school with (He’s in my grade.. Football star).. Will forever get to wear his letter jacket ha. He is an amazing football player, all-state, will be a 4 year starter, was up in the tops for the nation in rushing yards at one point this year, not to mention he’s def. easy on the eyes.. has a body to kill for.. Etc.. And his letter jacket is annoying! His medals make it jingle.. haha

If one owns the HS letter jacket and it’s cold out, I say why not wear it? Who cares what anyone else thinks?

Hey, I have my Dads’ college letter sweater from 1946, definitely cool

“Here is the drag, see how it goes,
Down on the heels, up on the toes,
That’s the way to do the Varsity Drag”

Ah, memories of June Allyson and Peter Lawford.

Tell me, are there even such things as COLLEGE letters, letter sweaters and letter jackets anymore?

None of mine wore their letter jackets once after graduation. I now have an entire closet full of middle schooll cheerleader uniforms, prom dresses, homecoming dresses, letter jackets, graduation gowns, etc. Hopefully I can hang on to them long enough for them to become cool again.
I have the 2 oldest’s high school rings in my jewelry box as well. Youngest realized what a short time they are used and didn’t want one.

5 varsity athletes here. No letterman jackets. No rings. Put the state champ awards and captain’s letters and mvp trophies in a bucket in my closet.

Now NCAA D1 rings and shirts is a whole 'nother story!!

Kat

When I graduated from HS in the 70s we had jackets and sweaters. Don’t think anyone wore them to college. I had letters for band and academics, but they were definitely not as cool as athletic letters.

I never wore my HS ring after graduation, either. In fact, I wonder where it is now? Not in my current jewelry box, certainly.

None of my kids were interested in a ring. Or a jacket. They were amused when I told them–“You know those letters you keep getting? for cross country and academics? We used to sew them on sweaters and jackets.” How quaint. :D

Speaking of cheerleading uniforms, prom dresses, etc., don’t throw them away yet!
At my 10 year high school reunion, I wore my prom gown. What a hoot. Actually, it was a classic- black slinky halter style. But I knew. ;)

Edit- there is a program here in our area that takes old trophies and medals and recycles them for underprivileged youth. For everyone here who has a case of those- maybe there’s an organization like that in your area too.

Agree…ldgirl wouldn’t be caught dead in hers, but does like to wear her old NCA and National History Day t-shirts as pj tops at school. Also, loves her dad’s '70s era Heidelberg High School (Army brat) letter jacket complete with MVP wrestling and cross country patches.

Now you have all raised a big question…where the heck is her h.s. senior ring? Haven’t seen that thing in ages and I know she doesn’t have it with her at college. Hmmmm…

This is the reason I say, if you want to wear it, wear it. The jacket could have been pricey, and once you get to college, maybe you don’t have $160 to plunk down on another jacket when the one you have is perfectly adequate.

It’s still the thing to have at our high school. They’re $300, fortunately my two oldest have earned them as freshman so they’ll get to wear them all through high school. Thankfully my oldest had no interest in a class ring when I told her I’d need her to pay half towards it.

D is a college sophomore and still wears HS ring. The ring is atypical for a school ring, and is a very nice piece of jewelry. Her school belongs to a world-wide network of schools – all the girls who attend a school in the network have the same ring. Honestly, I doubt if she’s at all concerned that some people may think she’s “gauche” for wearing it.
