Hi guys!

Scripps is my first choice. I love the Core, the traditions, the location, everything! I'm really looking forward to the 5C's resources. I can take Arabic at CMC!

However, my mom said that I can't visit until after I'm accepted and it will be amazing if I even am!

I live in the SW corner of Missouri, so it's difficult for me to get out to CA.

Is there anything about Scripps that it doesn't publicize on its website? Could someone also please describe their visit?

Thanks!

You really should visit before you decide. You might absolutely hate the atmosphere.

ReesesPieces: I would love to, but I don’t see how I can. It’s not cheap to fly and while I could pay for my airfare out there and back, I wouldn’t want to go alone. I don’t have family in CA, so I would have to check into a hotel, get to the campus etc. I don’t think my mom would let me go by myself anyway.

What is the atmosphere like?

Anyone else?

I would love more opinions!

There’s a fly-in program you could apply for: [Discover Scripps | Scripps College Admission](http://admission.scrippscollege.edu/discoverscripps)

VerbalWarfare: Thanks for suggesting it! I don’t think I will get chosen because I’m neither a first-generation college student nor am I an underrepresented minority…

Hi Chelsea: You don’t have to stay in a hotel, Scripps will put you up in a dorm with a current student and they will provide your meals. I personally, would not allow my daughter to apply anywhere EDI without seeing it first. Also, if you are worried about getting in, having an interview would help you make your case. You could also apply RD as really, the requirements for admission are pretty much the same, although ED does offer some statistical advantage.

Hi Chelsea,

I second revbon’s idea that 1) visits are awesome 2) if it’s the right time of year the admissions office will match you with a student host, and 3) interviews can help. If you fly into Ontario (check Kayak.com and Southwest Airlines for cheapest flights), there is a fairly inexpensive SuperShuttle system that can take you straight to campus.

But, I’ve known people in your situation who applied and were accepted to Scripps having never seen the campus, and then they thrived here. If you have an especially trustworthy gut, then go with it.

I love the Scripps website, but they are working to portray an image that is the best side of Scripps. I’d also suggest checking out “The Student Life” a consortium-wide student newspaper. And if you’d like an opinion on Scripps that is not wholly Scripps-biased, you might solicit the opinions of Pomona/Pitzer/HMC/CMC students on their CC forums to see what kind of interactions or cognitions they have regarding Scripps (just keep in mind these might be biased the other direction :P).

Revbon50: This is a silly statement, but if I stay in the dorms, my mom would have to get a hotel room and that can be expensive. I know my mom knows that if I get in ED 1, I will have to attend, unless the FA package isn’t good enough. I think she’s assuming that I will get in because she knows how much I want to go there, but she would prefer if I just went to the university that’s 10 minutes from my house and graduate debt-free. She thinks that if I go to Scripps, I will be $200,000 in debt. Could that happen?

I almost think that my mom believes that visiting a college across the country is a waste of money. Her argument is, “If you think it’s your first choice, why do you need to go visit?”

My friend is in Florida right now visiting her dream college (Florida Christian College). She told her parents that she thinks God is calling her there.

Eternal Icicle: I read the Scripps Voice the other day. I really enjoyed it. I’ll have to see what Pomona, Pitzer, HMC and CMC say about Scripps.

I know that Scripps will be very liberal, but do you think that there will still be some conservative people on campus. I heard that CMC is fairly conservative.

For you, I think heading to California for college could be life altering in a positive wy. Go for it! Sounds like you have a lot of courage. You really should check it out though. What if you like Claremont better for instance? Talk your Mom in to it or go alone and take the shuttle as mentioned

“I know that Scripps will be very liberal, but do you think that there will still be some conservative people on campus. I heard that CMC is fairly conservative.”

There will be at least one relatively conservative 2nd-year attending Scripps should you decide to go there. And yes, that would be my D. Mind you, I don’t know what The Borg will do to her by her sophomore year, but still…

Westseville: Thanks! It’d be cool to meet her!

Murphy600: My mom has always said to do what’s practical, but to me, it seems too early. The only class I have left to take in order to graduate is Communication Arts IV. I’m taking AP English, though.

I want to see if I can get in to Scripps. It’s a challenge.

I think I’ve bugged my mom enough about visiting. She said she needs to watch her spending and I understand that, but I really want to visit in case I don’t get in.

Oops! I didn’t mean to double post that. The first one has a typo, so please read the second.

Okay, well I just noticed this thread (sorry I’m a little late) but I can definitely empathize with your situation. First of all, I’m from the Kansas City area and will be starting up at Scripps in a few weeks! Second, I applied ED II without visiting first. Obviously it’s best to visit before making a decision like that, but it wasn’t possible for me either. But I had done a ton of research and really felt that Scripps was the best fit for me and applying ED really does help your chances…this past year ED I acceptance was 55%, while regular was 30%. And since money was an issue with my family as well, we knew that if I visited, decided I didn’t like it, we could always back out with money as the reason, which would definitely not be too far from the truth. Is that the best avenue? No. But it’s not a bad option when you have few choices left. And when I did visit shortly after being accepted, it exceeded my hopes. I have honestly heard very few disappointed prospective students after visiting Scripps. Anyway, I hope you do end up at Scripps next year! If you have any more questions though, I’d be happy to answer them!
