Is it worth asking?

So - in my science class, I was absent for a Model Senate simulation for my AP Government class; I missed a classwork assignment (10 points) that was handed in and graded - the next day, the teacher told me that I'd have to find some time to complete the assignment after school or during a free period. I completely forgot about it - the other kids that were out made no mention of it and it basically fell to non-existent on my priority list. This was two weeks ago.

She gave me a 0 in the grade book today - and now my overall grade is pretty mediocre - not so much because it is a huge grade, per se, but because there's only three classwork grades thus so far, so its 33% of my current grade. If I were to ask for the opportunity to make it up - I'd ask for only partial credit. Is it worth it or should I just keep the 0? I know its my fault ultimately for forgetting but is it worth a try?

I wouldn’t bother unless you have to report your current grades for something.

Why not? It would only take a few seconds and the worst thing she can say is no.

Yea do it. A 50% is always better than 0%, right?

Of course. The worst she can say is no, and partial credit is always better than no credit. If you’re at a tipping point later in the quarter, then you’ll be upset at yourself for not doing this simple thing earlier.

So just as an update - I asked and she let me redo it - turns out that most kids didn’t make it up who were absent for the field trip; so she had a mini-class after school to make up the work; I got a 9/10 on it and that, with other grades that were put in as well, brought my grade up from around a 53 to a 95 - so all is good. I was terrified of what would happen when I asked her.

Hey, now is an excellent opportunity to learn from your mistakes. What will you do NOW to prevent future awkward situations?

I used to be shy about asking stuff like that, too, but as I got older, I started thinking, “What the heck?” Now I make all sorts of requests - “Can I pay this bill over several months?” for example. It’s kind of amazing how often I get a positive response. Wish I’d figured that out in high school!

@DHCP6768UDP - I’ll make sure to keep track of work that I missed straight away, definitely, and make sure to not accidentally forget about an assignment for weeks… lol.

@MaineLonghorn - It really is just a matter of realizing that there isn’t a lot that could possibly hurt you in asking - like other posters said, the worst she could have said was no, and I’d just have to deal with the 0 - it isnt as though she’d suspend me or something for inquiring about a make up assignment.
