Is it worth it to take it again? (Aiming for a 33)

Hello, I’m going to try and key this short.

I got a 31 on my act after getting 27 and 25 (tried something new, didn’t work so I just gave up) along with a subscore of 26 on english, 29 on math, 32 on reading, and 36 on science.

I feel as if I can improve math pretty easily since I’ve never studied for that section. Reading and science are kind of a toss up, I don’t expect to do worse on reading but I’m not sure I could get another 36 on science (never studied science once).

The real issue is English… I have never gotten a score higher than 26 (26, 24, and 26) and it the section I studied most for this last test. I just can’t seem to crack it’s code. I have ACT Black Book, Red Book, and The guide on how to get 36 (never read it though) and I seem to do well with practice problems but when it comes to the test even if I think I did well I got my score back and I’m disappointed.

I’m also a senior and my next option to take it would be in february which is a long wait, plus close to the deadlines for college applications. I have no aspirations to get into an ivy league school but more of a goal of a full ride or as close to as possible to a state university. My GPA is a 3.7.

Is it worth it to take it again? If so how could I prepare for the English differently?

What do you average at home on English. I usually get 32-33s but got 25 on the actual one so it might just be a bad day.

Study commas and subject verb agreement. That was my biggest problem. My 4 English test have gone: 24, 31, 31, 31, 35

I don’t particularly remember any certain scores I would get at home, just that I would consistently do better than this with practice problems.

According to the advanced score report, most of my issue is with the conventions of standard English as I scored a 30/40 on that section.

Will February result be too late for scholarship consideration? If not, I will take it again.

Have you looked at the ACT statistics for your target schools and where your current (and projected) scores would be? That should help you in your decision. February seems late to retake, though. Scholarship deadlines are often earlier than general admissions deadlines, sometimes as early as November 1.

A merit-based full ride is hard to come by these days. Full tuition is a more realistic goal. Here are some possibilities:

Also what state are you in? Many states have reciprocal agreements with other states for reduced out of state tuition, but again, it’s often first come/first serve.

I kinda figured a full ride would be hard to get but if it meant taking a test again to get the opportunity I would. I checked that site and my act is competitive for most of those besides OSU, but a lot of them the gpa requirement is too high. The one I would have a shot with would be Ohio Northern which I will look more into. I think their application fee is waived online so I might just send an application to see my financial package.

I think for most schools I apply to I should get 50-75% off tuition which really isn’t that bad I suppose!
