is it worth it?

I know I waited way too long but would it still be worth it to apply to umich's biomedical engineering program? I don't know if there are spaces still available or not.

OOS
ACT: 30
GPA: 4.00
Rank: 2/200
Many AP classes
Good ecs, recs, and decent essays

Any input is welcomed on if I waited too long or have a legit shot. Thanks

There are still plenty of spaces in CoE but you only have a few days left.

Thanks, anyone may also let me know if I have good chances or not

If the 4.0 is unweighted I would think your chances are pretty good as long as you apply on time.

ACT is a little on the low side. I’d say low reach.

ACT score will not affect the OP’s chances.

Median ACT for CoE is a 31 and that was from my year (class of 2014). With average scores becoming higher I’d say a 32 would put you in a safe spot (obviously with everything else in your app being good too).

Yes the 4.0 is uw, thanks guys

Clutch, you are assuming the ACT score is the first thing that the admissions counselor looks at. U-M is primarily focused on unweighted GPA and course rigor. With a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a slew of AP classes, they are only going to look at the ACT so see if it is good enough and a 30 is good enough. The OP’s chances are not going to be enhanced with a higher ACT score. In fact, a 4.0 student with a 25 ACT score probably has a better chance of admission than a 3.4 student with a 34. The higher median ACT results from the students they want having higher ACT scores rather than a search for students with higher ACT scores.

I would have to respectfully disagree with the notion that a 4.0 student with a 25 has a better chance than a 3.4 with a 34. Obviously it is a holistic admissions process so everything is taken into account (course rigor, extracurriculars, etc.) but the ACT/SAT allows adcoms to distinguish the GPA inflation that high schools may have. I don’t really think someone with a 4.0 and a 25 ACT really stands much of a chance unless they have an incredible hook. However, I believe that a 3.4 GPA and a 34 ACT has an above average shot at admission. In OP’s case, I’m saying that a 30 ACT is just below the average for the entering CoE students. It will likely not hold him/her back tremendously but it will not particularly be spectacular to the adcoms. Also, I would like to add that the average is 31 for OOS and Instate. The average ACT for OOS will likely be higher.

Just curious as to where you are getting those stats^

If you take a look at the point system that U-M used to use for admissions you will notice that the difference in points between a 24 and 36 ACT score was the same as the difference between a 3.9 and 4.0 GPA. Although they haven’t used the point system since it was ruled unconstitutional the holistic review maintains the same bias that the point system had but they just don’t award points. You would be surprised at the number of students at U-M with ACT scores below 30 but a low GPA is the kiss of death.

This sounds remotely like the study done years ago in California where SAT scores did not reflect a student’s success in college but their GPA did predict success. SAT subject tests also contributed to a correlation with college success but not the actual SAT test.

Hmmm sounds like work ethics to keep GPA up is what’s important.

Well technically res ispa I would not have gotten into CoE using that point system coming in from HS OOS 3.1 GPA and 32 ACT. I don’t really have any spectacular hooks, I am convinced that my ACT is worth a lot more to them than my GPA IMHO. Just using this https://www.collegedata.com/cs/admissions/admissions_tracker_result.jhtml?schoolId=379&classYear=2015</a> with only accepted clicked and out-of-state clicked I find that the average for the entire college’s accepted OOS ACT to be a 31 with a low of 26. For CoE it is going to be an even higher average ACT.

Not sure how accurate that is though

Clutch, in your case with a 3.1 GPA you would have been in the bottom 7 percent of admits even back in 09…however, if your OOS school is known to UMich to produce great students, be rigorous, etc., then your ACT score would have been used to corroborate same. Usually, the high ACT/low GPA combo is not an indicator of admit success, but since it’s holistic, there ARE exception.

Apply Apply Apply. You have a very decent chance and there are still several spots open.
